Do all aluminum rods need to be clearanced to clear the cam, on a hemi with standard cam location? If so can any explain how to clearance them? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chuck! 330-352-8908

    rods...

    Chuck...

    Some rods yes, others no

Brooks 88's rubbed just a bit now and then (about .025 clearence). I haven't run the B2's?

The GRP's have a much beefy'er big end and have to be clearenced. GRP does it for me.

It also depends on the cam, and where you dial/put the cam in at as to how big of problem you have.

I will post some pics of the modified rods this afternoon if you need.

    Cam - Rod clearance

    Chuck...

I've posted a few pictures of the 2 different rods I have run in a standard cam/standard location KB5

    http://www.coolraceshops.com/shops/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=19

Dave can confirm this, but I'm sure the profile of the B2 rod is very similar to the GRP pictured.

You can check the clearance by installing the cam then 1 or 2 pistons at a time. Get a long blower feeler guage and go in from the bottom of the block. It takes a bit of messing around to find the correct and tightest location. You can also use a light and a mirror to look down in there. I'm sure everyone has their own tricks for this.

If I remember right in a KB you can even check the front cylinders through the front of the block. You just have to hold the cam in by hand so the cam doesn't slip forward with the cover off.

    Thanks Kevin!

Kevin: I really appreciate the pictures. I took my time today and determined where the clearance was needed and it came out to e exactly what your pictures showed. I am well on my way to getting my engine together and should have it completed tomorrow. I have the cam set and just have to finish clearancing the rest of the the rods. Thanks again, and I continue to learn more and get better. Chuck!

    balance affect

do you think clearancing the rods yourself will change the weights individually and affect the engine balance ? bob

    Chuck…glad we could help…good luck

Dave…thank you, we have so much content to load that I hope will help racers build the shop they want on a budget. We have had fun building this one, and have learned much. Our main purpose in the project was: Do it on a tight budget, and put as much “wow” factor in it as we can. When chasing the marketing/advertising dollar you have to have some “wow” built in. I will email you on the registration problem. I did not get a confirm email from any attempt to register.

V….any time you remove material you change the balance. It is not as critical on rotation (close to center of rotation) as it is on reciprocation. But, it is important to do these kinds of checks early in the process so you have time to make the balance adjustments before hand.

There are threads that discuss “balance” in great detail by those who know more about it than I. A quick search may get you some answers.

However, my concern is always about fatigue and removing material in high stress areas. We are trying to make standard blocks, cam, and rod combinations do things they were not designed to do.
