You use a degree wheel on the crank with no intermediate gear installed. Set the required degrees such as 35* on the crank degree wheel. Turn the cam with a dial indiacator on #1 intake until .050 lift and hold them still. So you now have the crank at 35* and the cam at .050 lift. Without moving those two see what lines up with the teeth and bolt holes on the intermediate gear. Each bolt hole on the intermediate gear has a different tooth relationship so you may have to try all positions to get the one that it will slide on and match the bolt holes. I painted numbers on the intermediate gear and mapped each position. So if I wanted 35* the position 1 maybe 37*, position 2 mayhe 36*, 3 is 35*, 4 is 33* etc.

In the Redding, CA are there is a "cam doctor". They can run it in their machine and give you a full computer print out of everything about it including lift, lobe seperation, etc. You might check some of the high performance machine shops in your area and ask if there is someone local who has that capability.
