What's a good range for cam end play? I thought this would be an easy one to find here on the forum, but I searched my *ss off and couldn't find any threads that had a number.

    Thanks,

    cam end play

I know thats come up in here before.

If I remember right, guys in here were saying with a cold motor you want about .001 or so, sounded kinda tight when first heard it, but I think its right on after thinking about it.

I used to run about .008-.010, and the timing would float around a little, went down to .001 and timing is very steady and the cam thrust bearing looked good when I took it apart.

You can actually run it at zero, or a couple thou tight, as the aluminum block grows in length as soon as it gets any heat in it.

Just a clarification IF you have an steel block it does matter to have a couple of .004-.005 because an steel block wont change as much as an aluminum block.

On a billet block we run .000-.001 only.

I suggest nothing less than .030 for shims. When you get to less than that, you need to machine the cam hub, pump hex adapter, or the pump extention, or whatever covers the cam gear. Thin shims split, and end up where you don't want them.

These are race engines, and you have to fit things.
