Lewis scores semifinal finish in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. – The saying goes, when you live by the sword, you die by the sword. Such was the case for young NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon Lewis and his family’s TigerFlow Systems/Morrison Construction backed team during this past weekend’s Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan. Lewis, who is known for his quick reactions, pulled the ‘trigger’ a little too quickly in the semifinals, resulting in a red-light disqualification.

Lewis, 22, from Broken Arrow, Okla., qualified his Steve Boggs tuned Injected Nitro Dragster fifth in the field with a 5.478 second elapsed time at 255.58 mph. In round one, he defeated Diana Harker with a 5.389. In his semifinal matchup with Division 6 points leader Shawn Cowie, Lewis left the line too soon, negating his 5.408 at 258.52 mph and giving the win to Cowie’s 5.466 at 261.32.

“Looking back at it, this was the first time I’ve raced at night in a while,” said Lewis. “I changed my visor to a clear visor, and the tree is just so bright at night. I guess it’s like the old saying if you don’t red-light every now and then you aren’t trying. I had really been hitting the tree in qualifying and had a .036 rt in first round.

“I hate to let the guys down with a red-light, but we’re really happy with the way Boggs has the car running right now,” Lewis continued. “We were having a few problems dropping cylinders all weekend, but they all stayed lit on that run, I just lifted early when I saw his win light on. We have a great car going into Indy next weekend, so we’re all very excited.”

Lewis moved to 12th in national points standings, just 30 points out of the top ten. The next event for the TigerFlow Systems/Morrison Construction backed team will be this weekend’s Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, the biggest event in all of drag racing.
