Lewis cites there’s no place like home in Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. – Just one year ago at this event, second-year NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon Lewis was making his national event debut behind the wheel of the family’s new A/Fuel Dragster, and promptly drove it to a runner-up finish. With a track record of success in both Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kan., Lewis and his family’s Morrison Construction/TigerFlow Systems backed team are eager to hit the track for this weekend’s O’Reilly Summer Nationals held there.

Lewis, 22, who is a surgical tech when not racing in Broken Arrow, Okla., not only has a runner-up to his credit here last year in the dragster, but also made the semifinals the year before when he was racing in Top Alcohol Funny Car. He enters this weekend’s event ranked sixth in national points and hopes to keep his string of success at HPT going.

“We’ve had good success at Topeka,” said Lewis. “You could call it my favorite track because we’ve done well in both the dragster and the funny car. It’s also one of the closer tracks to home for us. Hopefully we can keep our ‘mojo’ going there this weekend.”

“I’m also glad to get back on a national event track,” Lewis continued. “For whatever reason, we just can’t seem to get the car going on the divisional level, but we’ve ran very well on the national level. We’ve kind of been in a slump by our standards the last few races. Looking back, the two things we’ve changed is we tried running a different tire and we have switched back and forth between two fuel pumps. We went back to the old tires for the first round at our last race in Houston, which appeared to be a step in the right direction. We’ll just have to see how it goes this weekend in Topeka.”

Lewis is also eager to start racing in hot weather events. With forecasted highs in the upper 80’s, Lewis just may get his wish.

“We spent quite a bit of time racing and testing in hot weather conditions,” cited Lewis. “This car seems to run very well in the hot weather. We ran low .40’s at this race last year, so hopefully we can look back at that data and start from there. Hopefully we can make a strong showing for our sponsors Morrison Construction, TigerFlow Systems, ATTA Tank, Lucas Oil, Unifirst and A-1 Auto Body.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions, followed by one final session Saturday morning. Eliminations begin with round one on Saturday afternoon and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
