Lewis bounces back with semifinal in Norwalk

NORWALK, Ohio – NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon Lewis and his family’s Morrison Construction/TigerFlow Systems backed team made a strong step in the right direction by scoring a semifinal finish at this past weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. The showing moved him to eighth in national standings.

Lewis, 22, from Broken Arrow, Okla., qualified his injected nitro dragster 13th in the field with a 5.668 second elapsed time at 236.55 mph. In round one, he defeated Noah Condo with a consistent 5.646 at 239.06 mph, and then took out Paul Fishburn in round two with a 5.676 at 235.02 mph. Lewis’ semifinal opponent would be veteran racer Mike Kosky. Lewis took the jump off the line with a .057 to .071 holeshot, but launched into tire smoke, giving Kosky the easy win. Kosky went on to record a 5.406 at 260.61 mph.

“It was good to get back into the semifinals,” said Lewis. “We kind of got some breaks to get there but we’ll take it. The points count no matter how you get them. The car still isn’t running like we want it to. We kept making small adjustments to it, and seemed to have found an issue the last few runs.

“We saw something going into the semifinal and decided to get after it,” Lewis continued. “The air got a little better after it rained. We knew 5.60’s wasn’t going to cut it, so we went for it. I knew right away in the burnout it was quite a bit peppier. It wasn’t a big surprise when it smoked the tires. So was the weekend what we were hoping, no. But we did go rounds, picked up some points and got some good exposure for our sponsors Morrison Construction, TigerFlow Systems, ATTA Tanks, Lucas Oil, Unifirst and A-1 Auto Body.”

The team will compete in a match race at North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas this weekend where they will make two 1/8 mile runs against Aaron Tatum. Original plans called for Lewis to drive Brad McWilliams’ Top Alcohol Funny Car and place Kate Harker in the team’s dragster. McWilliams will not be able to attend, but the team will still place Harker in the dragster. Lewis and the team will return to the NHRA circuit Aug. 22-24, for the Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Topeka, Kan.
