Lewis looking to score in home state

NOBLE, Okla. – In traditional stick and ball sports, home field advantage is everything. While it might not play as much of a factor in NHRA Drag Racing, don’t tell that to Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon Lewis and his family’s TigerFlow Systems/Morrison Construction backed team as they get ready for this weekend’s Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series closer at Thunder Valley Raceway Park just south of Oklahoma City. With the help of former World Champion tuner Steve Boggs, Lewis hopes to break through for his first divisional victory in front of his home state fans.

Lewis, 23, from down the road in Broken Arrow, Okla., always looks forward to the only Oklahoma event on the schedule.

“We’re going to have a bunch of friends, family and sponsors out this weekend,” said Lewis. “I’m real excited about the weekend. The car has been running good; I just have to get rid of my red lighting problems. That’s the second division race in a row I’ve red lighted in the semifinals. We’re still looking for the first win on the divisional level, and it would be great to get it here in front of our home state fans in Oklahoma.”

In light of the death of Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Bobby Martindale two weeks ago in Atlanta, NHRA has shortened the racing distance from the traditional quarter-mile for the Top Alcohol cars to 1000’. Lewis hopes it is not a long-term move, but agrees with the short term motives.

“I think racing to 1000’ is good for this weekend,” stated Lewis. “Noble [Thunder Valley] doesn’t have a sand trap or net, so I guess it’s the best thing that can be done. I’m not a big fan of it, because drag racing has always been a quarter mile. Safety wise, I’m for it. Hopefully the tracks can be improved over the offseason with sand traps and nets so we can go back to quarter-mile racing next year.”

Despite a shorter racing surface, Lewis expects strong performances this weekend.

“There are always a lot of good cars in Noble,” cited Lewis. “The air is supposed to be pretty good this weekend. It will be interesting to see what it takes to make the show this weekend.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
