Lewis looking to bounce back in Chicago

JOLIET, Ill. – After starting the year as a regular in the late rounds, second-year NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon “The Kid” Lewis and the Morrison Construction/TigerFlow Systems team will be looking to return to that form during this weekend’s Torco Race Fuels Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago. Lewis enters the event ranked third in national points standings.

Lewis, 22, from Broken Arrow, Okla., hopes that changes made in a first round loss at last weekend’s national event in Topeka, Kan., has the team pointed in the right direction.

“We ran well in the heat at a few races last year, but that was a different motor combination,” said Lewis. “We have made some good runs with this combination as well, but these A/Fuelers can be picky. That’s why we’re going to so many races this year. We’re trying to learn all we can. It’s all about making runs and collecting data.”

“We made some changes to compensate for the heat during qualifying,” Lewis continued. “The car wasn’t responding, so we went the opposite direction for the first round and the car seemed to pick up. It should be a little bit cooler this weekend, so hopefully we won’t have to fight the conditions as much this weekend.”

With over 33 of the top cars from around the country, including all ten of last year’s top ten points finishers, entered for this weekend’s event, there will be little room for error.

“It’s going to be tough,” commented Lewis. “We did pretty well here last year, hopefully we can get out of the slump we’ve been in the past few races and make a good showing for Morrison Construction, TigerFlow Systems, Lucas Oil, ATTA Tanks, Unifirst and A-1 Auto Body.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the Top Alcohol cars followed by one final session on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
