Lewis hoping to bounce back in Houston

BAYTOWN, Texas – NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon Lewis and the Morrison Construction/TigerFlow Systems team will be looking to bounce back from a first round loss in Atlanta during this weekend’s Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Houston Raceway Park. Lewis enters the event ranked sixth in national points standings.

Lewis, 22, who is a surgical tech in Broken Arrow, Okla., when not drag racing, has been one of the hottest cars on the national circuit before losing in the first round of the recent Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Atlanta where he not only drove the family’s A/Fuel Dragster, but drove Brad McWilliams’ TigerFlow sponsored Top Alcohol Funny Car. He was the first driver to qualify in both Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car at a national event since Gary Scelzi did it in 1996. This weekend he welcomes the task of concentrating on the dragster, and is hoping to make a move in Division 4 standings.

“Atlanta was a busy weekend for me,” said Lewis. “It felt like I was constantly going and doing something between the dragster and the funny car. I have some SFI 15 boots I’ve been real comfortable driving the dragster with, but you have to wear SFI 20 boots in the Funny Car. So instead of just keeping my gear on, I had to take my helmet and neck restraint off to change boots between swapping cars. It was a challenge.”

“This weekend in Houston it will be nice to just focus on the dragster again,” Lewis continued. “Not that I wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to drive Brad’s Funny Car again, we just need a good showing in Houston to make a move in the Division 4 points. We’ve done well on the national level, we just need to start going more rounds at the division level. It will be interesting to see what the weather does; we may have to figure out a hot weather tune-up.”

Lewis is also anxious to get back on the track after diagnosing the problems that lead to his early exit in Atlanta.

“We changed rear ends in Atlanta, and had problems with the brakes all weekend,” stated Lewis. “We never could get them bled all the way. In the first round, it pulled me through the beams. We also had to run our backup fuel pump. That pump just wasn’t big enough for the bad air; we couldn’t get enough fuel in it. We found a brake line that was sucking air and causing the problem there, and we have our big pump back, so I’m really looking forward to putting Atlanta behind us. Hopefully we can make a good showing for Morrison Construction, TigerFlow, Lucas Oil, ATTA Tank, UniFirst and A-1 Auto Body.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with one session, followed by two sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
