Lewis looking to get back to ‘normal’ in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon “the Kid” Lewis and the TigerFlow/Morrison Construction team are looking forward to returning to ‘normal’ racing conditions at this weekend’s AC Delco Gatornationals at the famed Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville, Fla. After finding a solid level of consistency at the season-opener in Pomona, Calif., the team encountered ‘mineshaft’ conditions coupled with a tricky track at their last outing in Belle Rose, La. With mid seventies forecasted all weekend and a track known for fast numbers, the team is looking forward to picking up where they left off in Pomona.

Lewis, 22, who is a surgical tech in Broken Arrow, Okla., when not racing, cites the team won’t let their struggles in Belle Rose deter them, as they are unlikely to see weather conditions that cool the rest of the year. Despite not running up to the form that netted the team two national event final round appearances last year, the team still netted a semifinal finish out of the weekend.

“We’re just looking forward to getting back to normal conditions,” said Lewis. “This is our first year trying to tune this car on our own, so getting into killer air on a so-so track kind of threw us a curveball. We had the car going down the track pretty good in Pomona, so hopefully we’ll see similar conditions in Gainesville.”

“Right now we’re just trying to get laps in and learn as much as we can,” Lewis continued. “As the air gets worse, the harder it is going to be to make one of these cars run. It’s not that hard to go out there and run a number in good air, the trick is making the car run a number in the heat. We did a lot of testing in those kinds of conditions last year. It’s hard to put air in one of these motors that doesn’t want to be there. Hopefully we can go down to Gainesville and make a good showing for TigerFlow, Morrison Construction, ATTA Tanks, Lucas Oil, Unifirst and A-1 Auto Body.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars with two sessions and will conclude with one final session Saturday morning. Eliminations begin with round one on Saturday evening and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
