I'm about to buy a new set of rods. Just broke a C&A at 15 runs no complaints just looking at my options. Does anyone have any experience with the C&A? I'm looking at Brooks, GRP, and Miller. I'd love to get so insight on this one. 526 screw in a tafc. Thanks

I have broken my crank between #2&3 rod and the crank broke the block in half when it tried to exit the block but the C&A rods did not break even thou everything else on the engine broke.Surprised to see them still trying to keep the broken part of the crank in the block.I am trying GRP this year but still have C&A rods in one block and have not had problems with them. GRP at the time had quicker turn around time when I ordered them.

I purchased the MGP rods over the winter... Hope they work out well.

Took about 2 weeks to get them made.

Yesterday another set of Howards showed up.

Why does it seem that few people use Howards? for us its one of those "ain't broke don't fix it" things

I like the idea of extra strength from forging and the fact that it takes less clearenceing of the block for bigger strokes.

    GRP for me

Nothing against the other mfg's, but I've had a lot of good luck from Brian and the guys at GRP. Great service, can get them out quick, and they take a licking. There's a reason they're in most of the Top Alcohol cars out there.

I've seen them take a number of overrevs from driveline failure and the like and keep on trucking.

I think there is some distinction between manufacturers, proper maintenance is key in rod life or preventing problems. Rule of thumb is if it's important enough to torque, double check it. Also, on rod bolts, make sure there is plenty of oil (usually regular motor oil) on the bolt.

as to what Will said oil the rod bolts very well and also put oil on the 2 halfs, something else..Bill Miller told me one time to pull torque all at one time not to pull 1/2 then 1/2 on the other rod bolt and then come back and pull a final pull...Dave

I have tried several different rods over the years and have managed to break all of them. I broke C&A, Brooks, BME,and GRP. But the Howards rods broke sooner than anything else. Never again will I use them. I was told by the father of a guy who was TAFC World Champion several times that they had tried Howards Rods and they broke them warming the motor up. In the next breath he told me to get them out of my motor. I thought they would be ok for one division event. One of them broke in half mid-beam on the first pass. Parked us for half a season until I could get it fixed. Spend a couple hundred extra bucks and go with the GRPs. Connecting rods are not the place to try to save money.

I like GRP's the best as well. I have broken a few, but traced it back to a bad torque wrench (didn't calibrate it for many years, my fault) that was torqueing 25 pounds too much. I also don't like torqueing the rods hot anymore, whenever possible, I'll take the pan off and let them cool a bit before re-tightening.
