I dont know how many of yall read this, but after reading some of the threads on here, I feel its time I say something.

I do have some background in event promotion and coordination, i know the money that goes on behind the scene, and I know how to do a break even analysis. It's quite clear that some of you don't really care to take a risk on promoting a divisional event. You're making your money at the back gate off entries and that's quite clear. Some of your divisional dates don't really lend themselves to crowds, especially if your track has a national event in a few weeks after your divisional. Why the hell promote a few alcohol and sportsman cars when you have a national a few weeks later right?

Well I would like you to all pick up the phone and give Billy Meyer and the crew down at the Texas Motorplex a call. They pack the place every year for their divisional. They give out over 10,000 tickets each year for the event. You know what happens when you get 50% of those people out to the track? They buy your $4 hamburgers, your $2.50 french fries and your $4 coke. They see and take in all those big expensive bill boards all over your track you sold to companies. You gain potential new customers to buy that $50 ticket when the nationals roll around. You not only win, but the racers win. They can sell tshirts to these people. They get exposure, their sponsors get exposure. They won't feel embarrassed to bring a sponsor or potential sponsor to your event.

So if you're not going to promote your divisional, spend a little time, work with a radio station, give away some tickets to get a crowd out there and still make some money. You'll win, the racers will win.

Note: I still think many of you are missing the boat by not promoting a divisional event more. However, this is just a note of a possible alternative if you aren't going to promote it.

    Regards,

Will: Here is another perfect example I went to RT 66s website to see when they are opening for testing. The web site mentions the 2 national events, nite of fire (jet cars) monster trucks, NMCA and a few other events. They do not mention the Lucus Oil Divisional race. There not even promoting it on there own Web site. If i was Lucus Oil i would be upset.

Old divisional races where definitely promoted much better.

I believe the Lebanon Valley Track in NY does an alright job today.

The Woodburn Track in OR does a good job for its division or the media in the area covers it well.

Still I think Will's sugession sounds good.

Anyone interested in buying a track together?

Will.......can only tell you that by flying my guys in to the Memphis event, I doubled the number of paying fans at the gate! It's really sad. Brownman. :(

Hi Will, Jeff, TJ, & Brownman,
Just had to come to Route 66's defense here as the divisional event is on there website. They have sold the titlerights to the Chicagoland Dodge Dealers, so that they can promote the event, and are also giving away several thousand tickets to try and get people interested in coming to dividional events again. The reason I was aware of this was that they have also hired me to display our Top Alcohol Dragster at the NASCAR event there, which happens to be one week before the divisional.
I know that they tried a few things to promote last years divisional, but were disappointed at their results. So instead of throwing their hands up in the air, they are going all out this year. In the Chicagoland area, there is so much to compete against, for the spectator, but hopefully they win that war.
Here is a link to the Divisional ad on their site. It is also mentioned a few other places.

    http://www.chicagolandspeedway.com/cgi-bin/r.cgi/r66/event.html?SESSION=q3XaKf8Zq&N=&EventID=1032

I think I messed that link up, but you can cut and paste it into your address bar and hit go. Or you can go to Rte. 66 Dragway then schedules, then NHRA , and click on the Division 3 event on July 16 - 18.

BTW. This came from another track source. If a track wants to have a divisional event, they must BUY it from NHRA. Then in return for the thousands of dollars they recieve, NHRA gives the track 150 small cardboard posters, 1500 Lucas Oil Drink Coasters, and a 1/2 page ad for the race in National Dragster. No advertising assistance, advice, or help to know how to put people in the stands. UDRA had a pretty good ad plan, and even helped some tracks paying for it. Hopefully when TARA meets with NHRA next, they can bring this up. NHRA is supposed to be promoting racing and racers, not just turning a buck on us.

    Have a great day,

That second link was another one of my mistakes. Here is the real way to their home page (I think).

Will, that's Great that the Motorplex promotes the Div. races as good as it does. The best crowds at a Div. race I've ever seen is by far Tucson! Haven't been there in 2 years, but I'll bet they had at least 5,000 on Both Sat. and Sun. It's too bad they had such low car counts last weekend, the fans in Tucson deserved better.

Oh and have WE all FORGOT the "shame" of NHRA and the "NO PROBLEM RACE TRACK" SPORTSMEN "CAJUN" Nationals,,,,,,that will not have the 240+mph dragsters and funnycars,,,yet feature "top sportsmen pro stock look alikes" and also payout a fairly large sum for a local band for entertainment......well a lot of my neighbors and freinds that know I'm into fast NHRA cars are not going because they were expecting a Cajun Nationals race of the kind we use to have,,,,I pity the poor spectators that show up only to see a fast et "hit the brakes to win" race. Thanks NHRA for continued proof of the meaning of N.H.R.A. <translate> No Help Racing Alcohol....
Will, when TARA can convey these stupid actions and decisions by track"promoters" and achive a fare treatment and commitment by all involved, then you will have truely achieved a real purpose and accomplishment. Good luck with what you and TARA are attempting. Warren Dauzat Divsion 4, home of the No Alcohol Sportsmen's Nationals,,,,"dial-in anyone?"

p.s. Will, if you're not certain if ANY track owners or "promoters" read this web site, I for one suggest you push the "print" button, and fax a copy of this tread along with all others regarding the poor treatment of the Alcohol Class, to each track. Please feel free to use my quotes when doing this. Warren Dauzat

    Warren,
This situation at "no problem" still burns my ass.
We should all tell no prob and nhra that if you can't have the fastest sportsman class at the Nationals we will not be there for the division race!!!!!
This is so far out in left field it defies imagination.
The guys that own the track are a bunch of door slammer racers anyway so what do you expect. They don't care they will just hire them a jet car and pro mod to have something to advertise. This seems to be their mindset.

You got that right. If we could at lease get more alky racers to comment on this tread in the manner in which you, Will and I have,,,then I would be happy to PRINT these out and Deliver to Pat Geoffreon, the owner of No problem, whom I assisted in putting he and Carey Menard of NHRA, together when he was going IHRA. So before we do or at lease consider a BOYCOT of Div.4 race in October, let's get some mutual support from the rest of the alky guys and gals, not just D4, on this unfair treatment. Then perhaps they'll learn for next time. Warren Dauzat

I have a sister who lives close to Baton Rouge, so we were considering this race as a way to visit with her. She loves to go to our races, but doesn't get a chance too often.
After the No Problem management decided to exclude the Top Alcohol classes from their big event, we have started re-thinking that trip. We try to be loyal to the tracks that are loyal to us.
As the race draws nearer, it should be dicussed more among the racers.

    Take care,
    Marty

The focus and attention will be on racing in the core NHRA Sportsman categories, but with the help of Pat Joffrion, owner/operator of No Problem Raceway, the well-rounded program is overflowing with a weekend of impressive features, including exhibition passes by competitors in Top Fuel, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Bike.

Just saw the above on the nhra web site, just thought I'd share it with you all, guess we know where the Top Alky Guys stand
