Any one using anti detonation coating on there pistons. I am running a blown alky BBC with Diamond pistons, and they are recommending it.

    Thanks

    Piston Coating

    I found these guys.

    http://www.poetonaptec.co.uk/xtreme.htm

They are also in Wisconsin. Never used it but they say its anti detonation.

I would phone Diamond and see if they have a type to use, they must if they told you to use it.

    My 2 cents

    Thanks Corey,
Diamond does the coating, I was just wanting to know if anybody has had it done and there are any benefits.

It almost seems like they are trying to sell you something that you don't need. However, I am planning on using Diamond pistons in my blown chevy so I guess I will have to hear this pitch as well.

How would a coaing stop detonation? or resist it? Just curious.

The only thing that I have seen a piston top coating do is make a thermal barrier so you may not burn the piston if you go into mild detonation. Maybe the theory is that if the coating works as a thermal barrier then the piston runs cooler and thin edges around the piston will not glow and start detonation if you go lean. It still don't think it will prevent big detonation if the tuneup goes way off but may prevent some detonation depending what is causing it.

BBC's have a tendancy to burn the area around the thin edge of the intake pocket on the piston. If this coating helps reduce the heat on the top of the piston, then I would say yes, do it. But, just keep in mind, a bad tune up will destroy anything. If anything, I would have the skirts coated because alcohol is so dry. Then keep the fuel system a little on the fat side.

Instead of spending money on coatings. Would it not be cheaper just to have the top ring postitioned a little bit lower?

No. Piston design is a real science, but basically the ring package needs to be as tight as possible, and as close to the top of the piston as possible. This allows the pin to be closer to the top of the piston, and gives the engine builder more options.

The best thing to do is to make sure your tune is right on the money, or a little fat to be on the safe side.

    Mike has it dead on!
It is just a thermal barrier coating. It keeps the heat away from the piston. It will cure mild detonation as the edges of the cuts don't glow red - etc.
You can run leaner without hurting things with this coating, (and other internal coatings.) The pro stock and NASCAR guys have this to a science. Since the piston does not get as hot, it does not grow as much, so they run tighter clearances piston to wall. I don't know if I could do that on a blown alcohol deal. But I do just that to all of my injected alcohol engines.
I run Poly-Dyn coatings. Thermal barrier on the tops, oil shedding on the bottoms and skirts.
