below is a letter i sent to bob frey, dave rieff, len imbrogno, bob devour and jim trace. please post your opinions and ideas to see if we can help.

    Gentlemen,

I am sending this email in regards to the possibility of doing driver profile segments in the sportsman tv show. Through a collaboration of the Top Alcohol Racers Association and InsideTopAlcohol.com, racers have been able to submit profile forms to the website, which have been stored, and forwarded to the NHRA announcers via email. This has been a step in the right direction, and has been noticable at all events.

To continue that trend, personally, I feel it would be a huge improvement to the sportsman show to film driver profile segments much like the pro show has. These segments could also be used at the track on the Motel 6 vision. It would really boost driver awareness, and put the fan more in touch with the personalities that will be the future pro stars of tomorrow. Additionally, it would increase the entertainment value of the series, which is the business we are all in.

With the majority of the alcohol teams being non-professional, there is a tremendous marketing opportunity for the 'working man' fan to relate to the 'working man' racer. Driver profile segments could not only get the fan in touch with the face behind the helmet, but show these people work 9-5 (or more) during the week, work on the car at night and race on the weekend.

To build the database, the profile segments could be done at each race on the 8 quarterfinalists in each category. Within a few races, there would be a significant database.

If this proposal is not feasible, a driver profile headshot should at least be taken, to be shown by the drivers names during pairings, or name listings during the round. This is something that was done in years past.

In closing, the present sportsman show is the best it's ever been. The airtimes are great, and the overall show flows well. However there is always room for improvement, and I feel the above would not only help the show, but the action at the track, the alcohol classes, which makes NHRA a better product.

    Regards,

    Will,
your suggestion is a terrific idea. NHRA, has in past years done spotlights on sportsman racers and had done some pretty good stuff..It tapered off when they lost the Nashville Network station..and seems that the focus has been on all the pros since. Lately, with the addition of Ashley Force, and some PR John Force has done, and the Lucas Familys involvement, NHRA seems to show a little more interest. However, the
alcohol show has always been a great show to watch. The key is getting them to try! and Hope that somebody listens.

I think it would also be a good idea if NHRA would post TAD/TAFC driver profiles, pics, and stats on NHRA.com. They have pages for all pro categories as well as Sport Compact Drivers. I may be in Super Comp, but one day I hope to move up to the TAD ranks and having that extra exposure would be a great thing for everyone in the TA classes. As you stated Will, it would allow the fans to get to know “the face behind the helmet”, and do it at a place that generates a lot of traffic.
