Trying to get a new 9.5 us gear 4.86 setup in our strange ultracase. We ran a 4.56 9.5 Richmond before with no problems. Had to clearance the pinion area a little but have good room now.

With less than .060 of pinion shims the set locks up. At around .070 to .080 the pinion will turn ok but the pattern shows the pinion is too shallow on both sides of the tooth.

We have never had to use the much shim plus this gearset has no good markings to show they are matched set.

It had yellow compound on the ring with a nice pattern when it came out of the box.

    Anybody have any ideas?

Are you sure its not a 10 inch gear - 10 inch gears use a .100 shim for a baseline - MW sells a different carrier bearing assy for it and strange sells a spacer assy to use a 10 inch gear in a ultra case. 10 inch gears measure about 9.375 give or take - 9.5 measures 9.250 give or take a few thou. US gear/strange do not put a depth number for the pinion which make it much harder to setup.

Yes I do. I bet your teeth are smashing into the pinion bearing race. Email me I have pics to show you where mine did. They changed the teeth it's larger overall. Hits pinion bearing race. Have to hand grind to fix problem. Kalsomotorsports8749@gmail.com

You nailed our problem, thank you very much for the reply! I beveled the ring gear teeth on the top of the heal side all the way around and it works as it should now.

    gear

    4.56 was a chevy.
4.86 is a screw hemi with 34.5 tire
4.71 is a nice 10 inch gearset available that some guys run.

    Not good.
188 mph with 14% slip and 9800 rpm. The Bruno pressure was low for some reason.
