“There’s Plenty More in There!” says Ham

cackiling pipes 2012 nationals.JPG With a blistering 5.50 second elapsed time in the first round of qualifying at the Australian Nationals, Steve Ham is convinced that his Mobil 1 Funny Car still has a “ridiculous amount” of untapped potential.

“We took that car straight off the trailer and ran a 5.50 after I buttoned off before the thousand feet mark, and looking at the data on how quick it got off the line and got to half-track, we were on a mid-forty for sure!” the excited Brisbane based racer said, despite the rest of the weekend being plagued by trivial issues.

“We were pumped after that first run, which proved the Noonan X1 heads really do have the “mambo” that Jamie thought they would, but we got caught out by some small problems in the remaining runs that undermined our potential to get in the finals.”

Despite qualifying in second position, the Mobil 1 team changed engines after damage sustained by a valve clearance issue left them no option. And with the mad scramble of a motor exchange, some unpredictable gremlins entered the camp and left last season’s Nitro Champs winner on the startline with an oil leak that ended their Nationals campaign.

“There’s a lot of anticipation in the team for testing now, after we’ve come to terms with the “couldabeens” of the weekend, and we’re determined to let this car loose and show what it can do.”

Head tuner James Rowland was upbeat about the weekend despite the dream-crushing end in eliminations.

“We’re pretty hard on ourselves in this camp, but when we consider that we probably ran to half track quicker than anyone else on the weekend, it gives us a lot of confidence that when everything goes our way, we’ll do more than go well, we’ll really turn some heads that’s for sure.”
