Can anyone point me in the right direction on this one.....?
Would like to activate and latch the air solinoid for my clutch from a RPM activated switch. I would activate the switch after starting at the line (the rope for us boat guys), then hammer down & go automatically at a set RPM. Is it possible with MSD 44? Thank you

So, you don't want it to operate until you turn it on at the rope, and then let it do it's business at the desired RPM? Easy. Run an air solenoid through a N/O relay off the RPM switch.

Switch the power (+12vdc) to the relay (terminal 86) at the rope (dash mounted switch). Hook terminal 30 on the relay to the same earth/ground point as the black wire from the RPM switch and terminal 87 to the air solenoid (ground). Run an extra wire from the 87 terminal on the relay back to the terminal that is connected to the RPM switch (yellow wire).

When the RPM switch turns on, the relay will turn the air solenoid on and stay turned on until you turn the relay off at the dash switch, regardless of RPM. Hope that's what you wanted.

    Paul.

Thank you Paul. You have the idea I'm thinking of figured out. The switch you mention as you're describing, is it a MSD part or something else? I'm lost on what part(s) I need to purchase and from what manufacturer. The MSD catalog is vague on latching, etc.....

The switch for the dash is just an on-off, two terminal, toggle switch, the RPM switch will be an MSD 8957, the relay would be an MSD 8961, and I believe an NOS solenoid will do the job for the air side of things (someone care to offer something better?).

I'm sure I don't need to tell you to use marine grade everything (wire, terminals, etc). You could even use an RPM selector (MSD 8670-8675) instead of a bunch of pills to set your activation RPM, and that would make it easier for 'tuning'. Run the power (+12vdc) for the solenoid from your dash switch as well (in parallel with the power to the relay).

Thank you Paul. I got playing with what you said last night schematic wise on paper - it's all coming together mentally (got it). I really appreciate your help.
