any racers out here know about 3 phase?? I hooked up my surface grinder to a phase converter..and I might add my mills and lathes are also hook up like this..but when I turn on the surface grinder it starts to turn but just won't start and run fast..whats wrong...........I know I'ts not blown inj.:) thanks Dave

    well.....

If it is a rotary phase converter there shouldn't be too many complications but if it is a solid state or static phase converter then there is alot more "tuning" involved. It is not likely that a solid state unit will efficiently operate different pieces of equpiment as each of them will have a different motor load. Even equipment that has varying loads it hard to dial in. The process isn't that complicated if you have an ammeter. Capacitance and reactance is used to shift the line side power to "make" the third phase. Check the voltage while trying to start your equipment as voltage drop can cause malfunction. Some technical data for phase converters may be found at http://ronkelectrical.com this company has confirmed for me that some units they build such as for an elevator hydraulic pump isn't suitable for use with shop equipment. Good Luck, Bryce

    working 3 phase

WoW I thought working on the race car was confusing at times. Good luck Dave. Let me know when there is a good time to give you a call.
    to talk. Thanks Don 267-625-0891

Even if it is a rotophase there is usually a bank of capacitors also. There should be a nameplate on the phase converter that will give you information about it as far as what size (voltage and amperage)it is. That would be the first thing to check.

Just a simple thought, is the motor on the grinder wired 240 or 480 volt, most 3 phase motors are a 9 wire lead, so you can switch from low to high voltage, and ive never heard of a 480volt phase converter. Just something to check out, maybe there is nothing wrong with your converter at all.

The voltage of the motor is simple to change, sometimes there is a problem getting control voltage to get the starter and on/off buttons to work, alot of machines have a small transformer to make 110 volts.

ok..here is the latest......my phase converter is rated from 1hp to 8 hp nothing under or over that rating..well with no tech plate on the motor made it hard to trouble shoot but it is only a 1/2 hp and that was the problem, I put a smaller phase converter on it and now it works...so all day today I have surface grinded my heart out..Dave
p.s. thanks to all your help, you guys are GREAT:)
