For safety, i only like to carry about 1.5 x the amount needed. My old door car used about 3-3.5 gallons a pass (tow up, burn out, backup, run, tow back). I only carried about 5 gallons. I had enough incase i was left idleing at the line for a long time.

In case of an 'oh shit' moment, i would rather not have 4-5 extra gallons of fuel.

With a 5 gallon tank we would be out of fuel before the finishline. We use a 12 gallons tank.

most the cars Ive seen run 8.5gal or more size tanks. mine holds 10. 1 1/2 seems alittle thin, aside from the oops factor. maybe in a long slim dragster style. if it starts sucking air there will be a BIG oh shit moment

My dragster holds 6, i fill it with 6, after a 1/2 track burnout and backup, i have about 1.5 in the tank still.

Greg has a point but what if you are at a low elevation track where the motor needs a lot of fuel? I do know that if the car leans out in the top end it will burn pistons. Or the guy in the other lane is slow to start or stage and leaves you there idling for a long time? I have raced guys who had a lot of parts in the trailer so they didn't mind burning me down at the starting line. If I was building a new car I would build it with a big enough tank to cover all the possiblities. What if two years from now you decide to run it in a screw blower class? Or sell it to someone who does? Some of these race car parts are expensive enough that you only want to do them once and tanks are in that group. I would ask an experienced chassis builder for a recommendation. Dave Germain

    Greg,

When you get time, you need to upgrade your fuel tank to approx 13-15 gallon capacity. You will need this when you go to AA/FD.
