Would there be any advantages and/or disadvantages to spraying gel lube onto the valve springs when the valve covers are off? Just curious. thanks, Jessie Petro

I don't know about the gel type lubes but I do know the Nascar guys use oilers in their valve covers that spray oil unto the valve springs. That is how they make springs last for a 500 mile race without falling off on the pressure too badly. Dave Germain

When you say Gel-Lube are you talking about the Valco spray on liquid and turn to gel lubricant. If so I love the stuff and use it a lot on the valve springs.

hmmm... don't know how much of a difference it makes in a drag racing application with elevated rpm's only lasting 5-6seconds? canter may have more insight into our application? or maybe one of the manton guys? or are there any other cam/valve train guys on here?

i know in the nascar deal it's a matter of heat dissipation... water transfers heat 25x more efficiently than air. does anyone know the transfer efficacy rate of oil? what kind of spring pressures/ratses are nascar engines running?

obviously i don't think there could be any negative result... just don't know if an advantage can be gained?

Yeah I was curious about it also, If you are using it as a preoiler till the engines oiling system takes over then it would seem like a really good thing to use since it clings to the parts better than oil reducing friction and combines with oil easily at startup so there is not an issue with it blocking the heat removal properties of the oil like when people mistakenly use grease type lubes ( like peanut butter) on valve gear.

The Valco site says it fills voids in the metal and that it is great for valve springs? Is this due to coating the springs with a substance that causes oil to adhear to the springs quicker during startup providing additional cooling action,or is it due to reducing friction between inner and outer springs, or does filling the voids somehow reduce friction and heat/stress in the springs material generated by deflection/elongation of the material during operation?

    gel lube

    Mike,
Yes we have used the valco gel lube before. I still have some, and also have the prizm gel lube that we use in the superchargers. Thanks for your guys responses, just something I was standing in the shop wondering about. Thanks, Jessie Petro

    coated valve springs

I have been coating my valve springs since the early 80's. Same coating that the Nascar guys use. I get superior life out of them.( less friction ) 8200rpm blown fuel motor .Go to Polydyn.com and check it out. They have numerous different coatings. I also have them coat my blower pulleys, bearings, valve covers, gears, clutch shafts, gear drives, ect. You get the idea.

Dave, from what I have seen I do not believe the Prizm gel is the same as Valco gel. I have never used the Prizm gel on springs.
