I have the privilege of running my first aluminum block. What kind of valve lash expansion should I expect from setting them cold to running temp?
New Century Al block with big chief heads, Jesel rockers

Well I can tell you on our Ford all aluminum hemi I have to set the exhaust at .014 cold and the intakes at .018 cold to be at .025 when good and hot. After you warm the motor up you need it to sit for a short time to heat soak before you check/adjust them. The best adjustment is achieved after a run.

I don't run alum blocks, but with our stuff the cam supplier has been helpful in getting us close for starters. Ultimately checking them cold and than hot will tell you. Look at the difference between Mike's intake and exhaust. In the end my belief is consistency. :)
I'll be interested to hear from Big Chief/alum block experienced responders.

On some of the really huge, big inch N2O motors we set at close to zero to get .024 hot. BAE motors, .012 will get you about .025 hot. A way to get a good handle on this is to, right after the last run of the day set the valves hot, then next morning see what you have. This will be your cold setting. Of course we assume you are not spending the night replacing parts. :p

    Valve adjustment

Ron, We do it about the same as above and it works out real well, cold .010 and .012, after a run and hot .022, are you going to make the test and tune on the 14th at Sac ? we just ran the car last night and if it is not raining? we will be there. I hope it helps and good luck , Butch

Yes, I plan on testing the 14th also. I think there is at least 4 cars testing from Top Eliminator West. Hopefully no rain on the 14th. New engine is ready for testing.

    Blessings.........Ron.

I ran that combo for years. I set them 13 to 15 cold depending on inital air temp. That always gave me 26 hot
