    Hey All,

I know this was discussed last year sometime. Just wondering if there was a difference in rear end gears. We've run the Richmond pro gears forever and had quite good luck with them with regards to longevity, but the set I put in last winter looks pretty thrashed after 1 season (for us that's like 30 runs max). I think we shook the tires once all year so I don't think thats the issue.

Just for info our stuff is 9" Ford housing, 4.31 ratio, TAFC with screw blower.

Long story short, are there any other gear manufacturers that you all have been finding better than the other?

Did you switch brands or types of gear lube? We had that problem once and corrected it by not ever using synthetic lube again. I is very slick and protects against wear but it has no cushioning properties needed by gear boxes.

This is what I've heard for a 9 1/2 : US gear is the best, motive (Italian) next best, then richmond. I've used all three and this is pretty close, the set up on the motives was a little more tricky though, they didn't work for me off the depth # on the pinion. I think I'll use http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/catalog.asp?pg=70 10" next time. The 9 1/2 gears beginning with u are US the ones beginnig with r are richmond. They carry motive as well.

When I setup gears for people I always inquire what lube they are using, if using synthetic I always set them up tighter than manufacturers specs which do not address the type of lube.

I agree that the synthetic lube maintains a much thinner film and if the clearence is not tightened the gear teeth will impact each other, particularly during tire shake, conversly if you set them up as tight as you can with sythetic I feel there will be no more impact than with conventional, of course the highest hp gears I have setup are around 2000 so maybe my theory is wrong and at a higher hp level the gears will still suffer.

    Just my 2 cents,

Nathan, what weight lube are you running? Do you set the backlash to what is specified on the gear set or at some other setting?

Tried the syn. oil a few years ago in my top loader. Strange told me to get it out and use the std. gear oil. Thanks Don

We set the backlash at .008, I believe that's what the manufacturer calls for.

    Mike,

I believe it's the 75W-90 synthetic. Maybe the 80W-90 non-synthetic would be better? Or like someone else suggested the Redline stuff? Also as Dad said I believe we have it set at .008 backlash.

with no disrespect to sitko's car. are 9" still strong enough to run witha screw blower? with all the HP and 5sec ets it seems alittle lite? just seems like wanting more than 30 passes on it is asking alot. I guess I'll learn here.

Just to let ya know, I experimented with the "lighter Redline BLUE gear oil and witnessed metal transfer on the gears. The Shock-Proof Red has amazing properties, clings to the gears, etc...OK - wheres my free oil?!

Yeah, it's probably time to update to a 9.5 gear, but it's a big step. Actually, I am pretty happy with 30 passes, you can't expect much more. I think Nathan is still thinking of when we got a couple of years out of the gears when we ran the roots blower, the screw is a different animal.

    Redline

When I was driving for Harry Clack, he bought the car from Ed Marx. It had a 9.5" Top Loader in it with Redline gear lube. Bob DeVour had set the rear end up. We have no idea how many passes it had on it when we got it. We probably made close to 80-100 over the course of 2 years, all we did was take the cover off periodically, filter the fluid and put it back in. We bought a gearset because we felt bad, but when we pulled the cover, the gears looked too good to pull out. Lord knows we shook the crap out of it too. BTW, it was a US Gear.

I don't think you can expect much more than that out of 9" gears.
