I use to and still do polish the tops of the pistons on a buffing wheel to take off the sharp edges and reflect the heat off them. Ive put pistons back in after blown head gaskets as a result of lean that should have looked like the block, head and gasket. Also makes it easy to read the burn.

I used to polish until they were a mirror also, for heat reflection reasons. But then I realized I wasn't helping to keep the fuel atomized so I stopped.

On my nitrous motors I used to always debur all sharp edges then use scotchbrite and varsol then cotton and redblock to mirror finish, but this was with 120 octane fuel and nitrous where heat was the main enemy and the motors were way to lean and the crowns way to hot to worry about fuel puddling.

We coat every piston. You can run leaner as the pison does not absorb the heat. Also, you can run a touch tighter piston to bore as the piston will not grow as much without the heat. But with alcohol, don't run the standard black on the skirts. They don't really work together all that well. If you are doing the skirts, do the oil shedding silver on the skirts for alcohol stuff. (The same stuff as they put on the underside of the piston.)

Just for information, Dart has a pretty extensive coating department in MI. They don't advertise this a lot, but can do about anything.

I am a PolyDyn man myself.
Carl Benton basically invented this stuff for these applications. I like his stuff and his prices the best.

    coating

Contact Embee Performance in Southern Ca. Their phone # is 714-546-6907. They do all the coating for JE Pistons, BME, to name a couple. They do a ton of nitrous stuff and a majority of the coatings for the NASCAR Cup guys and off- road guys. Ask for Dave or Jeff. They can steer you in the right direction.

I'm slightly confused. What is the "standard black stuff" and what happens when used with alky? Is this a black polydyn coating you are referring to?....
