Has anyone cut the bottoms out of their spark plug tubes where the plug would contact the head, instead of the tube? I can see some advantages, taking off the valve cover without removing the plugs, and lowering the plug a little more into the cylinder.

    Any disadvantages?

Disadvantages are you pay less attention to plug readings and they will eventually let oil get by and onto the plugs exterior which is a pain but easily corrected with new o-rings.

So you would rely on the plug wire to hold the tube in?

    Tubes

We run are Brad motor this way on my car and most the cars I have worked on are this way. Brad makes clamps that bolt to the top of the valve covers that hold the tubes in. You can check them out on Brad's website
