excess fuel through exhaust

    just got my new motor started last night for the first time and have encountered a new problem I've not seen before. I have a 598 bbc with a littlefield 1671 hi-helix with the front pie shaped outlet, mounted on a tall Miersch manifold. I'm running a 990 enderle pump. The problem is that when the engine starts and is idling, I have so much fuel going out of #2 exhaust that it will not fire at idle speed of 1400 rpm. I tried leaning out the barrel valve and dropping nozzle sizes, but with no effect. It does appear to clean up some on wicking the throttle, but so much fuel is running out I am afraid the track staff will shut me off at the line before getting a chance to make a run.I've never used a hi-helix before so was wondering if this is an inherent situation? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys, Les

    Ohm out the #2 plug wire!!What type of mag?The fuel is mixed in the blower.It is normal for the cylinders at the rear to get more fuel at idle.My motor sits backwards in a boat and 1 and 2 are wet at idle.If only your #2 cylinder is wet,you have an ignition problem.Let us know what you find.

    Les go back to the basics, check that you have spark at the plug...
    Ohm the plug wire ,check that the plug isn't fouled or cracked.
    Double check the firing order, this may sound silly but I have seen guys with well over 40 years experience screw it up.
    Do a compression test to see if maybe the exhaust valve is bent or not seating properly.
    Check the valve lash , especially #2 exhaust.
    Did you actually lean it out?...is the reverse thread hime joint on the top side of the barrel valve/butterfly turnbuckle?... if so the old phrase Left Lean-Right Richen applies. ;)

    Wet Cylinder

    Stupid Question but, is that cylinder building the same heat as the rest or any at all?

    I'm getting good fire to the plug. Even changed the plug but didn't make any difference. I'm using a msd mag12 with 8.5 msd wires. With the clip-on spark check tool it will jump a really good spark at least 1/2 inch. I was advised today to possibly put a "dam" in the intake in front of #2 runner to try to stop the fuel from all collecting at #2. Has anyone heard of this? The plug does appear to fire again when the rpm's go up.During idle though, the pipe wil stay cold because so much fuel apparently won't ignite. Also, running .032
    gap on plug.

    Way too much plug gap for alcohol MSD recomends .015 to .018

    ditto as robert said, all plugs on all mags .014-.015 gap or you will overheat and burn out the points box. is the port nozzle for #2 same or larger than #1?? they should be close to same size.
    beware, some used nozzles might have been drilled out larger than marked. chuck

    For what its worth I ran into this before and as it turned out the timing
    was retarded 10 degree's.Reset mag and all was good.

    Agreed, that is WAY too much plug gap. We run .014 with our MSD 44 system.

    Guys, thanks alot for all the info. Set plug gap to 15. Have the first test run on the car Friday evening. Going to recheck the timing tomorrow. Again, thanks for the help. It is greatly appreciated.

    Took the car out Friday, but found an oil leak (think it's rear main but not sure yet) so I didn't get to run. However, my son took his car out and had a very unusual probem I've never seen before. He had 10-71 Mooneyham standard helix which locked up on the burn-out. We pulled it off, and found the two rear rotor extensions totally disentegrated. There were almost a double handful of large pieces. One of the pins that held them on was still in place, but the other was stuck in one of the pieces. Results were bent valves,etc. so we are pulling motor out tomorrow. Have any of you seen this before? I used to run 12-71 Mooneyham years ago, but never had any problems. Just wondering if this is a fairly common occurence and if there is any warning signs of potential rotor problems? Thanks for the input!

    I'm assuming that the rear extensions were hollow? I know a lot of the older blowers we have re-stripped for customers have hollow ones, no matter what brand, and they do crack.

    Have you had it re-stripped recently? If it was, the rotor could have been tightened too tightly in the rotor fixture and could have caused cracks in the ends.

    guys . Port nozzle size has no affect on idle. Thats why there is a port check valve, IT IS CLOSED AT IDLE!

    pac-man has a good point. The port nozzles SHOULD be closed at idle, but are they? It wouldn't be the first time I have seen poppets stuck open or closed. I have also seen guys put the poppet in backwards so it is closed all the time. One of the first things Ido when I have fuel system issues is to double check the basics first. I saw a TAFC once that wouldn't run except while it was being started. Turned out the pump drive had sheared. As long as they squirted fuel in the injector it ran just fine. Dave Germain
