Can someone direct me towards some information on the best placement of the fire nozzles? I am nearly complete with my blown 32 Bantam Altered and haven't designed the fire system yet. The bottle will be mounted right behind the front wing. The body is not a "flopper" type.
Where is the best place to mount the nozzles so they are most efficient, and how many nozzles? This is the first "open" car I have built and I'm ..

We have one nozzle pointing at burst panel, one at fuel pump, one at block from front, and two in drivers compartment.

I tried to keep them as 'sheltered' as possible as motor is open to air at speed.

Your best bet is to find some pictures of funny cars that shed there body's and are on fire, that will give you an idea of how the wind affects the flames, note that most of the the fire will be put out by the wind, and most of it will be sent in your direction. have a aluminum deflector as a wind shield, it wont burn as fast as plastic, I had two nozzles down around my feet, pointing at me and one in front of the motor/pump. all nozzles had three outlets. ;)

In the drivers compartment, where are the nozzles aiming?

Normally up by the steering column pointed at the drivers lower legs and feet. Most fire systems come with diagrams on where to place nozzles for different type race cars if you didn't get one you should contact the company.

Surely if they point upwards they have the possibility of putting foam on the drivers eye shield that will make it hard to see and control the car if it is still moving at high speed down the track. That is why our instructions say to point them down.

See what your saying but if your on fire at speed then more likely to have fire in your face so foam would be welcomed. I think there are many different systems and ways people run them, I don't ever wanna test ours out though....

My thought's on that are ::: a roadster has a vacuum in the drivers compartment, so any fire system is going to get sucked from the feet up, if my tought is right, Then your right Mike aim away from driver ,its going to get allover him no mater what. I think that the funny cars have the shroud in front of the driver to deflect the fire when the body come's off??

The nozzles that I have now spray out a fan spray about 180 degrees and slightly angled down (when nozzle is vertical). It's why I like several opinions on this because if I have to use this, I only have one crack at getting the placement right.

My Bantam body is just like the yellow Bantam on your site. Because my head and shoulders are above the Bantam body, I thought putting the sprays at my feet would work. I just didn't want all of the wind to suck out the suppressant and I still get flamed.

In my old car (a 23T) and others can agree hopefully the wind or air hOwever you wanna put it, would be neck up, never ever felt it below chest. If yours is the same then I would spray upwards, but every car is different, in our topolino, the old body we used, even though it was open roofed there was nothing in the cockpit, no wind at all, could even drive it with visor up and would never shut it.

When I fit the system to our Bantam, I will put the facing upwards so its drawn up by passing air. Hopefully you or I will ever have to use them.
