I've done a lot of ring combination testing over the last couple of years in my blown gas deal. My current combination and best so far is a Total Seal conventional AP steel .017 dyke top (they now stock) napier sec ring and there 25 lbs tension oil ring.

We used to use C&A tool steel .017 dykes top rings but have now switched to Akerly and Childs rings. They are basically similiar to the Hellfire rings. I am not sure but I think the top ring is High Tensile Ductile.

Most of the top blower cars have switched to these rings. Call them up and talk to them and they can tell you a lot more on what rings you need and why

What convinces you that they are better? aka, more HP on dyno, faster MPH's, it uses more fuel, etc

How many runs can you expect (Hemi 14/71 alcohol 2000hp) out of a set of rings?

Tool steel rings cannot take the heat like these HTD rings. Heat makes tool steel rings or some other rings loose there tension and sealing capability. I have never kept track on leakdown over time but they last a lot longer. Tool steel rings or other rings last until you go too lean and raise the chamber temps then they lose their tension after that. The HTD rings seat really fast I think that 70-80% of the seating is done on startup and then the final seating in the first run. According to Akerly & Childs the initial startup is real important to the seating and life of a ring. If you use the wrong oil they will polish without seating or carbon up and not seat. The wrong oil can also cause the ring to heat up on startup and cause rings to lose tension. They say not to use ATF or regular oil and to only use a special ring oil that is sold by them or C&A or Total Seal.

i agree with MC... they seat very quickly, have consistent leak% early on and can deal with the heat

i probably do my assembly a little different than most?... otherwise i totally agree with MC NOT to use conventional oil or ATF and i'll leave it at that

It simply amazes me! When all else failed, I thought that I was on the right track when I went with Total Seal rings! Now everyone wants to "bail out" and go with another brand!:)
Just kidding, I have had excellent luck with the total seal rings, but remember I am only running about 1200 - 1300 HP on my SBC, blown alcohol altered. I will look into these other rings.

Fastavenger, the machine shop guy said it is the same hone as any other rings. Akerly & Childs can probably tell you what grit hone to use. You are getting above my pay grade on that.

    Two questions please......

Ron C. what is a "napier" second ring?

Would it be at all beneficial to measure and record the blowby during each run, and if so is there any sort of slick way to do so in a moving vehicle application? Didn't I see something recently in ND or some other magazine?

    Thanks.

Rings seem to be one of those areas that what works for some don't work for others. I've actually gone the other way. I was using HellFires and have had better service life out of the AP Steel .017 dykes. I actually at one point had four pistons with Hellfires and four pistons with the AP Steel dykes...in the same engine to see which one's worked better for.....me. And I even installed the AP steels on the cylinder that was my usual first burn. The AP steel dykes came out on top. I have to say on my blown gas deal it's about as harsh a deal on rings that I've ever seen at 35 psi boost and no intercooler. I've almost got the tuneup worked out at 38 psi...but not yet!
But I did just finish a customers 540 BBC 1471 blown alcohol motor with the Akerly and Childs rings (he provided). Never have tried them specifically in my own engine. But always willing to learn if in fact they are "better" than the Hellfires. I run a magnate in my oil filter, and the Hellfires do produce a lot more cylinder dust than the AP steel dykes.

The Napier 2nd ring is available through most piston suppliers. It's a very good scraper ring. Below is some description (different size than me) from one of the piston suppliers.

Second rings are 1.2 mm, modified Napier with the "hook" blending into the face of the ring about .100 from the end gap. Napier rings are the ultimate scraper rings. Having the hook blend into the face of the ring accomplishes two important tasks. Firstly, it allows the rings to be oversize for hand gapping without having an extremely fragile area to chip at the end gaps. Secondly, the sealing and scraping action on the face of the ring is more uniform around the surface of the ring than a regular Napier ring. Ordinarily unit-loading pressure is much higher near the end gap and the Napier design is more active in this area. With the ROSS modified Napier rings this problem is greatly mitigated. Radial thickness is .140.

    Blessings.......Ron Clevenger
