I did. Top lube does not change the specific gravity so it is undetetable unless a little water is added to the sample then shaken, sample will then appear cloudy. Technically it is illigal to run in NHRA or IHRA because it is an "additive". "So far" I have not had any problems with either organization bouncing me from runs. I think as long as it is just top lube it goes along the "don't ask, don't tell" line of thought. JMHO. Happy Racing.

We run Redline synthetic top-lube, never had a problem, water is the main enemy when passing tech. :D

    top lube

it all depends on what you are running. top lube will not pass fuel tech as it not only changes the specific gravity, it changes the color of the otherwise clear methanol. nhra competition specs call for 99% pure methanol. if it does not pass specific gravity test, the water test for hydrocarbons, or is visibly discolored, it will not pass.

however, this only applies to tad/tafc, t/d, t/s and comp. brackets, outlaw racing, etc., it's ok to run top lube. bottom line if the class you're running has rules on fuel specs, you won't be able to run top lube.

i ran it in my bracket dragster, it helps lube the valve guides and is not as prone to 'gel' up in the fuel system.

    top lube or not

along this thought I have used lubes ,alky fuel (colored ) thought it was to much at times (mix ratio) and made pistons and plugs burn black ,cant read plugs. have now been running clear methonal and it still does this sometimes, what can cause this? sorry if this got away from original question. as to the clear fuel seems fine when we run often, not sitting for weeks

I also have had warnings from the NHRA guys when my methanol tested good and looked good, but "smelled odd" to make sure I got rid of whatever container it came in and junk the rest of the fuel.

it's worth mentioning that not all methanol is created equal, per say. vp usually costs the most, but they sell all of their fuel in lined drums. vp tends to have less transfers from production to end use than most brands. methanol readily absorbs water from the air. the more times it is transferred, the more water. this can lead to significant power losses if low grade methanol is ran with a high water content. it's no different than racing in low humidity or high humidity. at very least, only run alky from lined drums. however, other manufactures may have more transfers, so more water may be present. Power Mist methanol also claims high purity due to a low number of transfers. VP and Power Mist claim to transfer from the tanker to one storage container and then straight to drums.

Another potentially harmful problem from some of the lower grades is trash in the fuel. I've seen this first hand racing on a shoestring budget in college with my bracket car. I bought some industrial grade stuff for a lot cheaper than VP, and my fuel filter would be full of crap after just one race.

Will, (or anyone else with opinion),
What about Torco Methanol, is it pretty "clean" stuff? Is it worth draining the tank or not keeping the fuel in 5 gal. containers?

Brandon, I ran Torco with no problems until I switched back to Sunoco, it's eaiser to get around here. I just bought some Renegade on a deal, haven't tried it yet.
