What is the proper way to set the timing for the first time after installing a crank trigger? What about rotor phasing, how is that done?

first set timing with mag in the normal way then lock that in. crank the engine to the number of degrees on your timing pointer. then install crank trigger at the nearest magnet on the degree wheel. gap the pickup at .090 plug the trigger into the mag start and check timing .

make sure that you set the TDC timing mark(on your balancer, if you are running one) with the pointer at exact Top Dead Center. Then advance the timing to whatever you want to run by lining the mark up with the pointer. Then, slide the mag pickup up or down to line up with the nearest magnet in the crank wheel. Hopefully you've installed the wheel so that your mag pickup will be in the middle of it's travel on the bracket thereby leaving you the ability to retard or advance the timing either way. Next, phase the dist. to the # 1 cylinder. That should be it, o-yeah, make sure you install the trigger at tdc of the compression stroke not the exhaust stroke. This is how I do it on my big chevy, not sure about Hemi combo's. To phase the rotor, drill a 1/4'' hole in the cap of your dist. over the # 1 cylinder and set it in the block with the engine at your desired timing mark and line the brass tip up with the hole in the cap.
