use a colored parts marker to make your timing marks.
and you need to bring the motor up in rpm, (off idle)
to see a steady timing mark, there is fluctuation at an idle caused
by the mag generator and gear drive that causes the bounce effect.

If you were using a DRC (Dye Racing Components) drive you wouldn't see that fluctuation. Everyone tells me I'm nuts, but we had the same problem ten years ago and major surgery was proposed. Instead, after talking with Gerry Dye (what a GREAT guy!), we installed one of his drives. Timing didn't flutter with two Mallory mags, two MSD mags, or a single MSD mag. Secret's in the drive. He makes the best one out there. I have two single drives and two double drives. Would be willing to loan you a double drive with a plug in one hole for you to try to make a believer out of you. Or, if you run two mallory's or something, just take out the plug and run two. They are the greatest.

    camshaft end play

generally the tighter you run the endplay on the cam, the less the timing is going to jump around.

Of all the uses of helical cut gears in the auto industry, I never did understand why gear drives use straight cut.

It would seem that a helical cut would be perfect to keep the cam against the block and thus minimize the timing fluctuations.

    Timing light

Some of the top quality lights will pick-up 4 flashes per fire @ low rpms on msd stuff. I find using the cheapest type of light kills that problem. The good lights are too sensitive.
