    Hey guys...

I just purchased the used Pro Mag 20 on the for sale forums.

While I've not checked actual dimensions, this mag should fit into my Super Mag 3 base.

    The only issue being...

My Super Mag 3 currently uses the 4 pin drive, and the mag base uses the 2 pin drive. The Pro Mag uses the Dunn cross.

Now, since both mags use a 3/16" output shaft on the generator, I could bolt on the 4 pin drive to the Pro Mag...but I don't believe that's the right way to do it.

So, does anyone know, without me going to a machine shop and having a mating connector made, if someone makes the shaft with a mating Dunn cross on it?

Don Zig said he didnt know, and suggested having one made at a machine shop. The guys at Mallory didnt bother to return my calls.

    ...sigh.

You can get a dunn cross adapter and alonger cross for the mag that will work with your two pin drive, We might even have one, Check for it when i can.

Call my grandfather, George Sitko - 562-243-0482. He currently builds mag drives that use the cross-style drive, but used to make them with the pin drive, he probably has something already made in his shop in California for such an occasion.

Grandpa said I'd need to send him mag and base, and cost to make a proper shaft could run up to 300.00ish. That being the case, I'd be just as well off to buy a new base and be done with it.

I think my next step is to call MSD tomorrow and get a bearing to bearing dimension (outside face of each) on their mag base, and get a shaft diameter.

If they match (or are the same diameter and shimmable), I will probably be just as well off to buy a new shaft from MSD and be done with it.

The other option would be to take the current shaft, cut off the cross flange that's welded on, and tig on a circular piece. Throw it into a lathe and turn to proper diameter, then put it up on a vertical mill and cut the cross into it.

Sounds simple enough and should be easy for the ton of local tool and die companies around here.

You started off right. We have done just that. Took a 12 amp band clamp mag and took the Dunn drive off and replaced it with the 4 pin off the Mallory mag and put it on the MSD mag. Ran it on my buddys car all this year and have never had an Issue.

I have the two drives on to engines and can tell you that both the 4 pin drive and the dunn cross drive will fit the promag (44s) just make sure to torque them and that the key is in the right place !

Called Tom this morning on the advice of Mark Tigges.

Thanks for the help guys, the adapter is coming.

From what Tom said (as well as Mark) they've never heard of any issues using the adapter with the Pro Mag 12 or 20, and only the 44 requires the full Dunn cross (without adapter).

So I'm good to go. One less issue to deal with.

    Thanks to all.

I am not trying too steal this tread but i have been folowing it with interrest.

Does any of you out there know if there is an adapter for sale that fits the slightly larger shaft on an Mallory XI 20Amp and that will fit the cross adapter on an PSI rev limiter.

This is probably one of the most interesting sites out on the web from hom a have learned a lot in the 2-3 years i have known about it, so keep up the great work and thanks in advance.:)

The adapter showed up today. Snapped a quick picture of it in case anyone wanted to see it, or wanted to use it on their commercial website.
