If you go to Frank Hawley's driving school, It will be the best money you spend on your racing career. There's so much to learn and he's the best. ;):D

It's all kind of fuzzy...I remember leaving my room, the one with the padded white walls...they took me out of one kind of jacket and said to try on this other one...when they left one said to the other, "Good, one less mouth to feed at the assylum, I tell ya, top alcohol racing has been the best thing ever to reduce our overcrowding problem!"

    blown alky rides

My dad, Harry Hall, drove alky f/c's for years. Before he drove AA/GS for KS Pittman, and a front motored fuel dragster for Jack Kulp a few times. I learned from my dad, figured after 40 years plus of driving, he should know something! I drove a few "super" class cars a few times, but pretty much just hopped into our blown altered for my license. It's one thing to work on it and watch dad drive, but to actually be the one in the firesuit and swap feet is another! Not everyone can drive one, and not everyone driving should be in one either.

My first race car was a TAFC (aka BB/FC in 1978). When my driver (21 year old cousin) was going for his NHRA license, Dale Pulde ask "what have you driven before". His response was "I had a V-8 Ford Falcon in High School" and Pulde just shook his head. The late Larry Fullerton gave him the "blind fold" test and the burnt outline of racing goggles around Fullerton's eyes reminded us these cars can hurt you. We made the grade (in 3 runs) and competed the next month. A year later we switched to TAD (3 more license runs) before returning to TAFC in 1981 (first year NHRA split the classes).

Today (like Eli said), Hawleys school is the wat to go.

I started out a long time ago with street racing in high school. I eventually moved up to a dragster- front motored. Then to a rear engined dragster. I went to the California Drag racing school to get my super comp license. I bought a turn key top alcohol funny car and went to Frank Hawleys school for that. One thing to keep in mind though- only about one out of 20 guys who go to Frank's school get licensed their first time there. (I wasn't one of them) But more importantly he will teach you how to run the car safely. Without a doubt a more important lesson than a license. Dave Germain

My brother, Randy, and I grew up in an automotive world. Our dad had been involved in high performance stuff and eventually started to run 100 yard sand drags. He and our mother drove until Randy got old enough to start. I drove some, but most of our success was with Randy driving. After sand drag racing went into a lull in the Northwest, Randy built his first funny car for 1/4 asphalt racing. After a couple of years I got the itch to try it and Randy mentored me through it. Prior to running the funny car I did get my super comp lic., which helps you get familiar with staging and whatnot, but really doesn't prepare you for what an alcohol car does.
