I am looking for info on timing on A/Fuel engines??? Can anyone give me some idea where it is between??? no specific engine...

But I have a question i am intriguing for some time....Why A/Fuel its not allowed to have transmission with gears, by the book, as nhra stated??? Safety, engine operation??? dumb question but its always better to ask.........

I dont know why they dont, but it looks to me like if they had a trans. they would not get the car to move at all they go .920's or better 60Ft with out one with the power they make they would most likey have to really slip the clutchs with a Trans.

Think back to the Keith Stark "no gear transmission". :p

timing depends on alot of things, and might change a few times as the car goes down the track. things like track condition, corrected altitude and efficienty of the engine all play a role. so i'd say it's somewhere between 65 and 45 at any given point during the run.
as far as a transmission goes......4000ftlbs + 21##lbs + 2.90 + 17" goodyears = smoke, oildowns or .880 60 ft's. the difference between the two could take us right back to the timing question.....among other things;)

Initial timing 60- 70 btdc, with the current retard boxes,
and the msd 8973, teams will pull as much as 12 degrees out
at the step and bring the timing back in(advance) as the car
goes down the track. say 64 degrees at the hit to get the tire up and spinning, and then say at .450-.700 seconds pull (retard)anywhere from
6 to 12 degrees (depending on track) out(retard) of the lead to calm wheel spin down, and then bring it back in(advance) or not for the rest of the run.
a/fuel (direct drive no tranny) is to lock the motor up 1 to 1 to the tire speed.
the weight on the clutch will be applied to pull the motor down to help load
the motor to burn the nitro, and eventually get the wheel speed to match
the engine rpm within a certain percentage.
