MSD Plug Wires

    Late model with MSD 44.

    Is the MSD wire and molded assembly the selected wire and assembly to run with the MSD 44?

    How much is everyone modifying the hard molded ends that surround the insulator on the plug end? I have ground mine to get clearance.

    I have a strange head/valve cover combination that is making it hard to get the wire snapped on to the spark plug. I have already had arcing from wire to spark plug tube. I had moved the spark plug clip closer to the end to assist with getting the wire on the plug.

    I have Veney head with 3/8 spacer between a KB dual plug valve cover, William Bahl spark plug tubes with the steel ends. The spacer creates a bad angle to get the spark plug wire on.

    Any suggestions on a lube that can be used to let the rubber boot slide easier over the plug or anywhere to buy a stamped 6 3/8" long spark plug tube (thin walled). The William Bahl tube is really nice but I need all the clearance on the sides that I can get to align the wire with the plug.

    I can answer the question on something that makes the boots go over the plugs easier and that is MSD Sparl Guard PN 8804. Check this link http://www.msdignition.com/wire_12.htm

    We use brake parts cleaner. Spray a little shot in each boot, dump it out (but don't let it dry), push the boot on the plug. The brake clean acts as lube when wet, but then when it dries (soon after putting it on the plug) it makes the rubber sort of tacky, holding it on the plug...kind of like glue. Doesn't make it hard to remove, just makes it so that you can get it all the way on the plug without having the rubber try to push it back off.

    We've been doing this for several years without a problem. And no, it isn't hard on the rubber or the plastic tube.

    Thats interesting technique. I will have to try it. I am still trying to get the sparkplug boots off the plugs on my pickup truch after them being on for 60000 miles. They are stuck and I need to change plugs. Tried twisting them and using pliers but going to have to buy a cheap special tool so I don't damage the wires.

    We use brake clean as well have for several years and it works bitchin.....

    Mike, take the boots off with a knife or hammer, if you have 60,000 miles on them its time to change them anyway! L.O.L;)

    Tried the brake cleaner last night. Worked well.

    Is the MSD wire still the preferred set up?

    Still have concerns with the metal crimped end on the wire pushing up into the rubber boot and not making contact with the spark plug.

    MIKE, Can I buy your old spark plugs when you finally get them out? I've got a pickup truck too, and it needs a tune. Can't afford new plugs 'cause I race NHRA top Alcohol.
