I could be wrong....but I seem to remember him rotating the earth at Gainsville to the tune of that 5.63. I THINK Agent 1320 might be right.

Newberry set the record with a 5.63 at the 1998 Gators four years after breaking into the 5.6s at the Dallas points meet with a roots. The number was right. The year (1980s) ... not so much.

It was actually at the houston race that the 5.63 run happened. It was in the final against Tate Branch.

My question is what is the significance of a 5.63 out of a AA/FA, thats not near the record either. Is it because the AA/FA has an Anglia body on it. Neese and Knowles and Ron Fassl ( just to name two ) have run quicker and faster than that with their traditional T-bucket bodies Awful Awfuls.

    Roots or screw?

I might need a little history lesson here but why was Newberry running a roots in 1998 and not a screw? Rob Atchison ran a 5.68 in Rockingham 2005 and also ran 249.07 mph in 2006.Our understanding was that we hold the record for the quickest and the fastest roots blown alcohol funny car period. Some cannot tell the difference from a roots to a screw blower since most thought we had a screw on at Norwalk last weekend.I would love some clarification.Set the record straight.Something to shoot for in 2007 and beyond.

I don't know for real. But, my guess is it is the same reason he ran an AFT for so long. Tough to beat parts for free.

Also, his 5.69 might be the most amazing alcohol run ever.

    Not to shabby yourself.

    Tony S,

I can't tell you why it is so historic. I do know it was that car's first run this year and it was Shawn Umphries {Mr. Gasket/Mallory} 1st time to drive the car, along with it being a record pass for the team.

Other than that,,,I can't say why. But congrats to the whole team anyway.

kalamahoon, he did the 5.63 with a screw blower.
The 5.69 is perhaps the best lap in a TAFC (because it was with a roots) in over a decade. Atchison did it 11 years later (1995).
Hard to believe no one had run a 60 since Newberry in over a decade
Atchison had it a little tougher because of the AJ 481-x imo, with the new technology out there in the last decade and a half, hard to beleive no one else has done it with a BAE or Veney combo.

It does'nt matter Kyle if you go 5.50 with a roots someone will say with that run by Bobby 12 years ago it should have been done sooner.
it was also like 41 degrees and a rediculis barometer when he ran .69, Austin was running 70's with Bob all day also. no one even came close to those numbers until pomona that year when Randy went 5.77 @ 244.
