The v takes a lickin and keeps on tickin, better for a blown car.

Shawn, if it is a new found tune up you might want to use the M bearing to hone it in then switch after you are sure your not being hard on your crank, the V is much harder so it is very difficult to read them if you have never ran them before, you might not know if you have a problem. Just my opinion.

    shawn,

We swapped to the V bearing a couple seasons ago and wouldn't ever switch back. It has saved the weekend and the crank on more than a couple occasions. The V is way harder, and in situations where the M would have/should have turned the V stood up. Looked kinda crappy, but no black spots. Yes you do after time see wear marks in the crank but I think it's a small price to pay to get the crank polished every couple years.

    Just my opinion.

My opinion differs than those above, but for what its worth, we are still developing our tune-up and for that reason, use the softer M's. If you are NOT into pulling your oil pan and CONSTANTLY checking the bearings, better stick with the V's. The M's really show whats happening up top. We have pinched them as much as .010! OOPS! But it shows where hole has the problem, problem is if you don't change them after a "pinch" like that, you will spin a bearing!

We have switched to V bearings. One reason they stopped making M bearings for the FORD crank. The question I have is if you pinch a M rod upper out .010 how much pinch would you have seen if that had been a V bearing?

I also found out that the V main bearing measure different If you install the bearings and main caps without the crank then the V bearings read narrower in the middle than a M bearing.

With what you are saying makes me think the M's have more crush than a V
but i never tried that before, no crank and compare

I believe they do. You also add more than normal crush from the aluminum bearing caps to hold the bearing in tighter.

If you have excessive bearing smash you might not find out with the V bearing until its too late. We run the V but only after we stopped smashing the M. I would change a bearing after .010 smash...clean it up if its only .05 with a razor knife on the edge and yes you compare the middle to the top to learn the smash.

Mike, a .010 push on a "M" bearing would not show any push on a "V" bearing in my opinion. If you get a .001-.002 push on a V you are hitting it pretty hard. Equal to about a .015 hit on an M.
