Summit sells the # 8971 for $ 778.88 and the 8973 for $ 707.88 according to their web site . Kind of strange because the 8973 does a lot more than the 8971 if you check out the msd pro mag site .

I would use an MSD PN 7531 to control your Pro Mag if your rules permit it...

The new rules as posted by IHRA say that you can use 8971 or 8973 in af/c . That is of course if the racers find a sponsor for the class because IHRA has not .

The 7531 opens the window for traction control and so the new rules will nor permit it.

Got it Nick and thanks, Dont see a need yet to change the timing.

Notice all the Veney stuff for sale??

I thought everyone was using traction control already!

I dont think its a sinking ship, its just that the majority is running small combustion chamber heads.

Ya know, this puzzels me, the 417 Donavan had small combustion chambers, how did it become obsoleat? if the BAE is nothing more that a 426 with 417 heads, I know thats an exsegaration, but the Donavan was much easer to work on that any 426 I'v ever worked on,and I'm sure Marty will agree, so where did they go wrong?

I always thought that guys liked the smaller chamber heads so they could run a bigger bore with a lighter piston and crank higher RPMs?

    BAE versus Donovan

The Donovan heads were usually around 120 to 130 cc cumbustion chambers. BAE took the valve angles even further and dropped the combustion chamber to the 98 to 100 cc range. I neve ran the early BAE-3 stuff, but my impression was they were move to far verticle. The later fatheads were layed back over alittle. (I think.)
Had some good times with the Donovan, but can't say I'm itchen to sell my current stuff and go back to one.

    Donovan - part 2

The biggest factor with the Donovan becoming obsolete was prbably business sense. It was alot like the Beta VCR's. They had a product probably as good or better than the VHS version. The VHS people just marketed and supported theirs better. The same could be said for Donvan versus Keith Black. K-B did a great job marketing, and more importantly, supporting his products. Only my opinions.

Marty, just for the sake of argument, if some one made a cylinder head & manifold that would flow like a fat head for the 417 woulden't the 417 be a better motor, in termes of ease to work on?

    Donovan

    Eli,
In my opinion (& experience), the Donovan 417 block design wouldn't hold up. The main webs are weak, tending to crack with the stud holes. The block doesn't hold the sleeves very round, so running the larger bore sizes would be prohibitive. Also, I always struggled to keep a good oiling system for the Donovan (although I'm sure that's available now).
Nope, I'll stick with my TFX's.
Thanks. Reminds me how life has gotten better.

    Marty

Marty, have you checked out the Dale Emery/John Rodeck forged 392 style blocks? We have two of them, and they're great pieces. Granted, we don't run alcohol, well, not very much, but that is one tough motor, and is about 50 pounds lighter than the Donovan.
Another thing, the sleeves do stay round and sealed up, and it is sure enough easy to work on. Its also a beautiful thing to look at, damn shame it has to be covered up with diapers and trauma pans!!!
