running a fuel altered and just put in an MSD mag. i run a block mounted starter (tilton super duty gear reduction). with 12 volts the mag won't light... no big surprise there. was wondering what most people were doing? i don't run any accessory or electric bs off the battery. it only starts the car. will a single 16V turbo start get the job done? can you use 24V just to start it or will i murder the tilton doing that? thanks... sean

we have used 24 volts for a long time, never had a problem. just don't crank the motor for an extended period of time and you will be fine.

Double check with Titon, but as Dave said we have started with 24 volts with the same starter and a 44.
Only put 12 volts to the solinoid.
Keep the batteries up to snuff and run a tight gap.

more volts won't hurt the solonoid- A lack of volts is what kills the solenoid- We run 60 volts to start the f/c (volt meter shows 47 at the starter - loss is in the cables) the solonoid is a 36 volt solonoid. A 44 needs about 500 RPM before it gives a spark as it is not a true magneto, but is a generator.

    that's good news

yeah i did talk to tilton... and their tech guy acted like i was from another planet when i mentioned putting 24 volts to one of his starters. i know it's nothing new... but wanted to see what others were doing.
as for the solenoid... i've got a single 12 volt battery on the car that hits the solenoid and makes my reverse solenoid work. then i have a 24 volt set up that plugs into the starter motor to supply cranking power. figured this was the easiest way to have pretty basic batteries and use a regular charger.

Ran into the same issue when I switch over to a mag. Greg Porter sells a starter that turns 550 rpm on 16 volts and will take 24 or 48. on a 168 tool flywheel I have had mine for 2 years now. It also works with a drysump pan.

    Cranking

Don't know if this applies to you, but 4130 chrome moly tubing is NOT a real good conductor of electricity. Make sure your ground cable goes to the motor in order to limit the resistance to a minimum.
