OK, as my wait continues to jump into TAFC this fall, I'm still playing with this blown SBC. After this week of testing, I'm now up to 24 lbs of boost and encountered a freak spark plug thing. I've talked to the guys at Jegs, MSD, and a couple of high boost turbo guys about which plugs to use. I switched to the newer Iridium plugs (medium cold range) last week because their supposed to be the stuff for high boost applications, right? dunno now. I made one pass Wednesday night, ran a 9.20 in my 3350lb '64 Chevelle, 406 on gas. Two 750 BG blower carbs. I shut if off right after the lights (1/4) and towed back to the pits to read the plugs. We pull number 1 and 3. Plugs were very slightly tan 1/3 of the way down into the throat and ceramic as well. No signs of balling on the ceramic and strap looked blued down passed the bend. Except for a ting of tan, they looked like they hadn't been run really. Didn't notice it at first but just handling the plugs, turned one over, then the other one too, the ceramic slid down the electrode and was touching the strap !! no kidding. I could shake the ceramic up and down the center electrode! Is this some kind of detonation breakage or bad product? I was going to call their tech but thought I'd get you guys' imput first. thanks Rick

Could be my beer and speed reading. Jeez, that is two mistakes this week. I have to straighten up.

Yes, those plug will work great with gas and carbs (got it right that time). I think I would stick with the -9's to start and see what happens. Those iridium plugs should have worked. Dutweiller swears by they on his turbo'd motors.

If the porcelein is all white on most of the plugs and just a light tan fuel ring on a couple of the plugs would suggest not enough fuel especially if your blue line is where it is. One sure way to check on a gasoline motor is to pull off the headers and look inside the header down tubes. If it is white or light gray then you are way too lean. If it is medium to medium dark gray or tan (depends on what type of fuel) then you are close. If they are black then you are too rich.

It sure looks like detonation caused the ceramic to break and maybe because you are too lean.

See no beer so no mistakes this time.

Thanks Mike. I'll drop in a set NGK's tomorrow (Monday). Is the .019 gap good for both alky and gas? I'm back to the track Wednesday and going to add more fuel. I'll post the results. Thanks again.
