    Hey guys,
My name is Dustin and I just joined. I was wondering if anyone was still using the coan converter in Top Alcohol. I remember a few years back when I was on The Second Wind TAD with Billy Bybee a car just starting to use one. Also Is Allen Johnson still building the Olds type Motor. The reason I ask is that some one trying to break into the Top Alcohol ranks could take a little guess work out of it with a converter and a motor that is similar to a Big Block Chevy, and just try to get down the track consistently. The package may not be that competative but at least a guy could qualify and maybe go some laps. I was thinging of this combo in a Funny car since the injected cars are killing the blown dragsters, if they ever run right. Sorry just a little poke at the nitro guys. Ahy thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Mick Snyder is using a Coan converter in his alky funny car. I ran a nitrous PM car last year with Coan Converter and trans. I have since switched to a blower and clutch but I HIGHLY recommend Coan, they are excellent people that make an excellent product. We were able to change stators (bolt together converter) to fine tune the car and performed all converter maintenance ourselves. As far as AJ olds stuff, Im not sure if it is still being made. I know he makes the 481X stuff that is probably the only competitive wedge stuff out there but it is just as expensive as late model hemi stuff. I owned an AJ olds motor (got ripped off by a guy on the net SHAWN HENDRICKSON, Brenham Texas, I AINT FORGOT ABOUT YOU!!!) its kinda hard to find parts for that stuff these days. I would suggest buying a hemi. I just got one hat to pan and it cost me 1/3 of what my 722 NOS motor cost and that is AFTER I've put new pistons etc. in the blower motor!!!

    converters

Hey thanks man, We have been talking and think you are right about the ehmi motors, more people are going to have parts and knowlege about them than the olds stuff. Thanks for the info I will try to keep up with Mick and see how he does...

    Thanks
    Dustin

    converters & tafc

if you are considering tafc, i would look at the lencodrive with a 450-470 inch hemi. the abundance of info, safe fuel systems that make good power will quickly outweigh anything that would transfer from your bbc to a aj 481x. not saying the 481 won't run, it's just there's alot of hemi's out there, and it's easier to find someone who can make good power. not to mention parts are easier to find.

we've had good luck with the coan's all except for the sprag. we have a coan bolt together that we're converting to spragless. we're also going to try the transmission specialties converter that wayne morris is running in tad right now. morris has been 5.41/261 with that combo.

snyder has been good to us pointing us in the right direction with our fc, and if you go that route, i'll be glad to offer any help we can give you.

yeah the sprags became an issue with our Coan converters too. We were able to get 30 runs on the first one, then 3 on the next then 4 on the next. Jason sent me a "slug" to make it sprag less but it did slow the car down a little. This was with a NOS car so I can imagine how hard the Blowers are on them.

Outlaw, what things did you notice most about going spragless versus with sprag, other than just slowing down a tad? Anything noteworthy?

Anyone have a feel for whether or not people are finding the converter cars to be consistent in either alcohol funny or outlaw pro mod type applications? What happens at a marginal track? Can engine management with a converter really take the place of a clutch? Is the converter life kind of short in these types of applications?

Kind of curious as to anyone's thoughts on these issues, as we've been wondering about a converter drive for an outlaw pro mod deal (was clutch). We will encounter some bad tracks for sure, and we will be kind of heavy. Generating power will not be a problem. Getting it to the track will be a challenge though.

According to what snyder told me, it is more forgiving on a snotty trk and it has less tendency to shake the tires when low on power. Randy Baker also runs a lencodrive in his altered.526 hi helix roots Tune ups seem to be the same as clutch deal.

    Chance Converters

As far as converters in door cars Neal Chance Converters has built converters for almost all of the fast door cars in the country. RacingConverters.com is the website. I don't think anybody else has the warranty they do either.
