I been running some 33x16.5x15 Mickey Thompson slicks for a while now with rim screws (tubeless) I've had no problems but I'm starting to run some decent speeds. 205 last time out. How fast can you run these slicks before I need to get beadlocks ??? (I cannot buy a liner for a 15inch dia. rim)

I hear that the NHRA mandated the Pro stock cars go to beadlocks because they were going over 200. Should I be worried??

    Cheers

Russ, I do not believe the beadlocks where mandated because of top speed. They were mandated on ProStocks to give better control in recovery if the car got crossed up. Without beadlocks a car that has gotten crossed up will tend to roll more sideways on the tires making it easier to lose control. I agree that there is probably some side benefit on speed also

    Hi Russ,
The beadlock design came about for a number of reasons. The main reason would be to provide a positive lock on the bead to prevent the slick rotating on the wheel. The side benefit is reduced wheel weight (unsprung weight) therefore less HP loss to turn it vs. a wheel, tube and liner, around 30 lbs a wheel difference I think. Also as Mike Canter mentioned, a stability factor, but also staying in the light of safety, to eliminate the need for tube and liner which if the tube fails due to a tear / puncture (and it does happen), you now have a slick with 45psi of air in it and 4-6 psi in the other, not a good situation!

    Tire Speed

Russ, be carefull Bob Book lost a car due to tire-wheel separation. A/D, 211 M.P.H. I don't remember if they were screwed or not, but he has switched to beadlocks since then. Good luck!
