We are installing a low gear leanout on a PSI Dragster setup. Will plumbing the return back into one of the ports in the bottom of the pump hurt anything?

    What did you find out?

I have always heard to run the returns back to the tank.

I have asked a few teams and fuel guru's. I got both "if you return it to the bottom of the pump, it won't work" and "I run 30s & 40s with it returned to the bottom of the pump".

So I guess it really doesn't matter......... Teams are running hard with it both ways.

If you return fuel to the bottom of the pump it is posssible to put that returned amount of fuel into a heating loop. In other words the fuel is heated initially when it goes through the pump the first time then it is now returned to the bottom of the pump as heated fuel that is again heated more when it goes back through the pump. This can go on for a never ending cycle. The heating of the fuel changes its density and its cooling properties when it gets into the motor. If heating the fuel didn't make a difference then why does everyone shield their plastic fuel cans and car tanks from the direct sunlight? Kinda make you wonder.

The downside of returning fuel directly to the tank is if you return it close to the fuel outlet line of the tank it is possible to aerate the fuel so you want to ensure the returned fuel is directed far away from the outlet area.

    Fuel Return

    Mike,
Does it make a differance how much fuel you return back? I run the returns back to a fuel log I made about six inches long and two inches diameter, that seems to cure both of the woes....or so I have been telling myself.

Since you are running a dragster you can weld some -6 fittings into the main fuel line about 3ft away from the pump and route your return lines into them.
I would route the lines to a seperate fuel log (not attached to the pump or engine, helps stop heat transfer) then to the added fittings in the main fuel line.
That way the returned fuel would have more time to cool off before re-entering the main fuel line.
Also with using the new cloth braided line mentioned in another post will keep the weight down and the fuel cooler since the cloth braided line will not hold the heat in like the stainless steel braided line will.

    Just my .02 cents worth
