Data Logger Question?

    By Reading All The Post About Data Loggers I'm Going To Get A Rpm Data Logger Now My Question Is What Should I Start Out With (sensors) I Have Never Run One And Dont Know What I Need To Get.Blown Alky Outlaw Dragster Also What About A Flowmeter? Can Someone Explain What It Does And How It Works Where Does It Plumb Into System At What Info I Will Get From It Any Thoughts Or Suggestions Would Be A Help Thanks Jamie

    go with the flo

    the last flo meter we checked into was over $900.00 that makes a person think. that is a lot of $$$$$ on a pro top fuel team its a must on a outlaw I would have to do a lot of thinking. good luck on either choice.

    As a minimum you need:
    1. Engine RPM
    2. Clutch RPM
    3. Driveshaft RPM
    4. EGTs
    5. Fuel pressure

    Optional:
    1. Oil Pressure
    2. Accelerometer
    3. Fuel Flow


    The flow meter is used to measure the amount of fuel going into the motor in gallons per minute (GPM). Fuel flow is great if you have tuning software that will support it such as Jetsize and know what you are doing. If you can afford it now then it is a great option to know what is happening when you are trying to find your baseline tuneup.

    The flowmeter would be placed in the fuel line coming out of your barrel valve and after your leanout bypasses. To capture the actual amount of fuel flow to the motor you would have to run a single main line out of the barrel valve through the flow meter and then split the line to the hat and port injectors. You can either run the high speed bypass on this line prior to the flow meter or use the second output of the barrel valve for only the high speed bypass.

    Where is the best place to put the fuel pressure sensor ?
    Also Mike Canter you didn't list boost pressure , did you just forget or don't you think it is important to keep an eye on what the blower is doing ?

    Old age creeping in. Yes add boost to the required items.

    If you put the fuel pressure sensor before the barrel valve it will read a little higher than if it is after the barrel valve. If it is before the barrel valve you will see close together pulses caused by the pump vane rate from when it turns. These pulses tend to be less if the sensor is after the valve. Being after the BV you are seeing more of what the actual pressure is going into the nozzles. I prefer after the BV but some racers like it before. Which ever you pick you need to leave it there so you can watch the pump pressure and see if the pump starts going away or any other problems.

    A note her is if the sensor is before the BV then you will get a big pressure spike when you let off the pedal. These spikes can go up over 200 psi so make sure your senser can take that.

    could i just tap into the side of the highspeed tee fitting ?

    For a cleaner installation you can use a double high speed fitting and reduce one of the outlets down to a -4 AN or whatever size you need for the sensor line.

    We use a Racepak v300 for all of the things Mike mentioned and then some. We do not use a flow meter although I can see where it would be useful. I wrote a program that tracks and controls all of my port areas as well as the returns. It predicts the main pill based on any port nozzle changes and weather changes. I suppose I could create a calculated value in the Racepak that would use the total area and fuel pressure to calulate flow rate???

    You will find that the data gathered from a unit like the racepak is invaluable for solving problems and learning why your car did what it did on a particular pass. We could not have figured out how to make our car work with the clutch without it. The first thing I look at after every run is Engine RPM vs. clutch and where the driver shifted the car.

    We are running 6.20's and 30's at 225 in an altered. There's more in the car and it would be impossible to get there and we wouldn't be where we are without the data logger. The car is on the cover of www.dragracingonline.com if you care to take a peek.
