Valve Adjust. Hemi

    After reading the clutch maint. between rounds, Q. what's the best way to adjust valves correctly on a hemi? Thanks

    This is the way I have done it for years, probably 30 now
    This will put the lifter right on the base circle
    roll the motor to top dead center on cly #1 (compression stoke)

    set INT # 2 set EXH # 8
    then roll again 90° and every time you set 1 intake and exhaust
    Int # 1 exh # 4
    Int # 8 exh # 3
    Int # 4 exh # 6
    Int # 3 exh # 5
    Int # 6 exh # 7
    Int # 5 exh # 2
    Int # 7 exh # 1

    Adjust Lash

    I don't know about a hemi, but on mine (Blown SBC) I follow this same procedure between rounds:

    This was posted by John348, not sure how long ago. I was already doing this so I saved the post so I had documentation of how to do it. At 58 Yrs old, I have a severe case of CRS! (Can't Remember S__T!) :D

    Roll 90° and every time you set 1 intake and exhaust
    Int # 1 exh # 4
    Int # 8 exh # 3
    Int # 4 exh # 6
    Int # 3 exh # 5
    Int # 6 exh # 7
    Int # 5 exh # 2
    Int # 7 exh # 1
    Int # 2 exh # 8

    It may, or may not be the best way, but it has worked for me so far!:)

    Sounds like a whole lotta wasted time walking around from one side of the motor to the other.

    1-3-5-7-2-8-4-6 all done on the top of the compression stroke

    the motor will go around total of 2 revs
    remember cam tuns half speed
    you can set these much faster than fooling around with a pushrod in the hole
    but hey just trying to pass on something a i learned from chysler/direct connection engineers 30 years ago :D

    I wonder how many ways there are to check tire pressure?:rolleyes:

    I just check them in the firing order intake and exhaust at the same time starting at TDC on #1 and working every ninety degrees from there. You wont find .002 difference in any of these ways.

    First, you take your $250.00 low pressure only gauge (15#) and check the liners.:rolleyes:

    If the neddle goes around 2 1/2 times your good to go. :D

    Tires

    So is that the recommended setting for the front tires.? 2 1/2 times around the dial, Thats got to be better than just kicking them to see if they have air.

    I set the valves on the firing order because that also lets me leak the motor down at the same time.

    I have always set lash on my chevys by setting the lash when the opposing cylinder in the fireing order is on overlap .
    1843
    6572
    so set I 1 when 6 is on overlap then set 8 when 5 is on overlap ect, ect, ect...
    no need for pushrod or indicator just watch the opposite cylinder when the exhaust rocker is closing and the intake is opening it is in overlap .
    Is there a problem with this method?

    What do you set the valve lash at hot and cold ?

    I blow the front tires up until the compressor stops. Do not use a gauge. Goodyear engineers told me the wheel will fail before the tire. Just my 2 cents.

    have always used exh. opening adjust intake
    intake closing adjust exh.

    After 30 years of doing so I just watch as motor is rotated and grab them as they are ready on one side then go to the other side. If not sure about keeping track, Loosen nuts on rockers when think done check them if one is lose then you missed it.

    Depends on cam. I allow about .010 growth. I normally run valves when engine is cool and go .008 to .012 if hot I will go .018 to .022. Never liked big lash settings.

    We start at TDC #1 & run the firing order, which is Sharpied on both sides of the hat tool tray. The turner guy runs the odd hole numbers & another crew guy runs the even side numbers. The turner guy will call the holes as he rotates the crank. Before checking we slide the rockers back & forth on the shaft to confirm we are on the correct cylinder. Adjust to .010 cold, .020 hot, confirmed after torquing the adjuster locknuts to 35 lb/ft. We usually can get the hot lash done before the clutch guys are setting stand heights.

    When the other side is checking/adjusting the off side guy is inspecting for broken spring tips or other things that should not be & also checking the tightness of the shaft lock screws on the stands.
