Whipple Versus PSI

    Hypothetical question.............

    If a person had a given engine, and ran it with a PSI-C, and then ran it with a Whipple A980 (axial), would there really be that much of a difference at the end of it all?

    Not sure what your asking but the whipple displaces more than the PSI, so you would have to spin the psi harder to make the same air. I’m thinking when they were both “legal” the whipple was somewhere in the 58% overdrive and the PSI was 125%?

    Thanks Rob. Here is kind of what I am wondering........

    Both superchargers will have their own mechanical speed limitations tied to them, and certain rotor efficiencies versus speed as well. This is totally apart from any class limit rules considerations.

    So in a pure Outlaw class, if a person ran a PSI-C at 228% could a Whipple A980 keep up with or even exceed the performance potential of the PSI-C at 228% ?

    I guess I would also ask whether anyone knows the weight difference between a PSI-C and a A980?

    That Whipple moves about 25-26% more air per revolution. One would have to see the Efficiency graphs to determine if theirs a cross over.

    30#s heavier with the same options, blower bag, belt guard and pulley--Jim in TN

    You also cannot get a Whipple SFI Certified.

    I thought there were ways to still do that??? Or am I wrong?

    Not that I know. There was a person that bought all the rights to that Whipple blower and we thought he was going to start doing SFI Certs but never happened.

    I think they had to go to Sweden for Re-Cert.....or maybe I am thinking of something else

    That was the guy in Sweden that was going start up a Whipple shop but never did.

    Bob Newberry was authorized by Whipple to cert. the blowers for a while but then Whipple called it quitts

    Last time I talked to whipple they said there was a place down the street from them that could recert them. I don’t have a good back to back comparison we run the A980 and it is in my opinion comparable to a c rotor. we run out A at 90 over. We also have a 15 year old engine comb with veney heads and don’t turn over 9400 rpm we have compared boost numbers with guys running a c rotor on a modern engine and we are close they out perform us up top but are running more rpm. For the cost difference the A works great and will overcome the 30 lb extra weight. I will say not all A980s are created equal !!! We have had 2 and the one we have now is better than the previous one !!!

    Yeah the compressor flow of the C is quite curve linear upward according to Norm (RIP), with RPM, so that explains the top end difference. C's are much like A980's, not all are built alike.

    A good friend of mine took his C PSI off the car and installed a Whipple and tested and raced but could not achieve the results he had with the PSI. It was close but that doesn’t win races

    No, they were both at the max allowed by the race rules.

    Mike we helped him a little with info I don’t remember what his boost numbers were. watching the videos seemed like he couldn’t get a handle on it down low. I don’t think his boost numbers were as good as ours and the rules of the event are definitely a factor we run the mid west drag racing series where they try to keep everyone right around 3.70 et. I don’t know if we can go 3.59 like Halsey did we have been 3.69 and feel there is a few hundredths left in it but I think our blower is better than the one he had.
