moroso oil accumulator

    hi
    i m currently building an blown and injected on alcohol wedge mopar engine (413 cui) and after reading the thread on the amount of oil that should be used in a wet sump pan,and the risk of oil "starvation" during desceleration,would a 3 quarts oil accumulator be a good idea?any of you using it in a funny car?
    is it ok to use it for a first engine start?

    I have a 3 quart accumulator on my altered, we just leave it on....

    ZERO oil issues, start up, shut down, hard breaking .....nothing!!!!

    How much air pressure is required in the accumulator?

    I believe you should fill it initially to ~6 psi empty; when your oil pump fills it up it will read around 60 psi or what ever your pump can put out at idle.

    The important thing to remember is if initial pressure is too high in the accumulator you won't allow it to store the 3 quarts of oil in it even though your final pump pressure will still show on the gauge.

    We use the big high pressure Accusump unit. 14psi initial air pressure. Our oil system runs at 95/100psi. We have a solenoid valve energised when ignition is on. It holds pressure well at shutdown if the driver remembers to kill the ignition before the motor stops rotating, so it can re-prime system at startup. 2 seasons & ok so far.

    I currently use a check valve in the line going from the oil pump to the motor and to the accumulator. When the motor starts the accumulator is filled with oil to pump pressure ( ~ 100 psi). If at any time the oil pump can't supply the motor with ~100 psi oil the check valve closes and the accumulator takes over. This works great at the finish line during hard deceleration.

    we use a 3 qt accumulator but we charge it and the filter with oil using a enderle 110 pump and drill motor. Then at start up charge the back side with 50psi of co2 so that it supplies the motor 3 qt at a constant 50 psi. Oil is suppled to the pump side of the filter by a -12 line with a swing check to stop back flow . Accumulator is back filled using a -4 line with check from the clean side of filter, this keeps the accumulator from taking oil from the motor to fast when the pump regains pressure

    Before we start the motor we remove the plugs and roll the fuel up to the hat. When we are rolling up the fuel the oil pump is also charging the filter and accumulator. Since the plugs are out there is very little wear on the bearings. We find this method a lot easier.

    You do not want to charge the back side of the accumulator, if you do it will limit the amount of oil that can be stored in it. The oil pump will charge it to the same oil pump pressure.

    we're charging the back side with a regulated 50 psi so that it doesn't compound that way all 3 qts discharge at a constant pressure and engine oil pressure will fill it to the full capacity

    I used 15 psi in the accumulator. Worked great for years.

    I have one for sale if someone is interested.
