I was on the phone with NHRA tech the winter of 2015 getting compliant for the 2016 March Meet...carbon fiber was in for a while - then out....pretty sure the spec is a heavier mild steel or chomoly now...carbon is out...need to look at the rule book...

I'm not sure if carbon fiber shields are OK for funny car....but I was building my shields for Fuel Altered....rule is steel only....they only needed if the wing struts are mounted to the cage and over 6" long...

Carbon is an option for TAFC and NFC, but not altered with wing.

Murf McKinney still sells these I believe.

Brett Williamson's Team Eagle makes a proper Carbon/Kevlar shield for TAFC that is beautiful.....not bucket and brush!

We used the McKinney kit when we put together the new chassis. They come in oversize formed sections. Once you have them trimmed to your openings, then you need to weld in the supports, tabs & drill matching holes in the carbon.

i have an altered with a flip up body and a funnycar style tree , so a shroud that covers the bars wont allow body to came down and rest on the shoulder hoop , is a steel one allowed that fits between bars like photo above , wing is attached to shoulder hoop and roll bar

On the Altered style cars the shrouds must have 2" clearance between the top of the shoulder hoop and bottom of the shroud (see my photos above)...I think that the funny car shroud must meet the shoulder hoop....

I have never understood this. NHRA says that the TAFC has to go all the way to the shoulder hoop so that "safety equipment cannot get caught in a gap". I have never had any luck getting them to tell me how an altered driver has less chance of the safety equipment being caught in the gap. The only thing I have ever heard (NOT from NHRA) is that maybe a gap lessens the odds of flames being captured in the helmet area in a fire. One thing is for sure, if someone is trying to do a transformer, it is problematic if you are using the same shield.
