Just wondering what clearance I should have between the the landing on the button and oil ring? This button is just below the oil ring and locates just the bottom of the ring - upper ring land is in the piston. The piston manufacturer ships the buttons with about .003" - but I have noticed that the end of the oil ring is "bent" just a little if the gap ends up in the button area. I have also noticed that the buttons "rock" a little and have wear on each edge of the ring land. I replace the buttons after a few seasons (maybe 50 runs) due to this wear and figure they should last forever. My current order new pistons are gonna ship with .001" clearance....just curious what engine builders recommend on this...would .0000" be too tight as the button does move up and down a little in the pin hole? I know this is nit-picky stuff but attention to detail wins races...

Clarifying. Are your new pistons coming with 1: .001 pin clearance OR 2: will the buttons be .002 larger on the diameter?

Pistons and pin clearance are exactly the same - the button "ledge" or land has .001" ring clearance compared to .003" before - the button "rocked" and allowed wear on the landing and also allowed the thin oil scraper ring to bend if the gap was in the pin area....did not support the ring very well with .003" - hope this helps....again - piston is the same but the buttons will allow tighter ring clearance

Maybe a better way to explain this is that my current buttons allow .003" additional vertical ring clearance (making the ring groove .003" wider at the button area) and the new buttons will allow .001" additional ring groove width....question is could I order buttons with the ring step the same as the piston groove (making the oil ring groove width the same on piston and button)?
I will measure and provide photos in the next day or so...

    Ring land measures .187"

Ring land at button measures .190"

Button shows wear from rocking in bore - allowing the ring land width to increase even more and bend the oil scraper ring

Just curious how tight the button ring land clearance can be - should it match the piston ring land at .187"?
Piston manufacturer has been sending buttons -.003" for .190" ring land width at the pin (see upper photo) and current order will be -.001 for .188" width at the pin.....thoughts?

I’ve never used buttons but why not use a wider groove and a rail support under the oil ring?
