Has anyone out there taken an existing blown alcohol deal, and turned it around to run say 70% nitro?

I'd be interested in comparing notes in this regard, as I've been asked to help on such a project.

Thanks in advance for any info that gets shared. Online or offline.

that’s what it was supposed to be, 70 % nitro on a high compression alcohol motor won’t work

I think you missed the point of the original question. I already know that an optimized blown meth deal isn't going to like 70%. What I am curious about though is what would it take to move one to 70% compliance. We're not talking TF super low compression specs here, just what would it take to move to 70%.

You almost have to start from scratch. Compression, cam, fuel volume, heads maybe depending on the combination. More info on the basic combo would help.

Not in any certain order....but here are a few things that will need to be changed...
    Compression ratio - 6 - 7:1 range
Barrel valve - make sure to swap the spool for nitro application
Clutch - I would not recommend trying this with a converter - slipper style clutch preferred
Transmission - 2 speed with 1.20 - 1.40 low gear depending on your rear end ratio
Larger volume fuel pump - sized to your cubic inch
Larger fuel tank - 16 gallon minimum
Exhaust valves - Inconel material and make sure to increase the stem to guide clearance (nitro runs hot and will seize the valves in alcohol prepared heads)
Oil filter screen - make sure to get the correct screen for 70 wt. oil

There are tons of little things that will make your new nitro combo go boom if overlooked...these are just a few that I can think of for now....we can discuss sometime....

From what I have been told run 30 or 85 plus anything in the middle is very unhappy and hurts parts

I've run as high as 14 1/2 -1 on an injected deal at 100%. Blower set up should be about 7-1 max, maybe a little more when running lower percentages like you are talking about, but I wouldn't go past that myself. I blew the head off a motor with 7 1/2 and some other issues. That deal cost me a bunch of money on a custom built engine.

You can have a badass nitro motor at 6.5 to 1. at 75%. Awesome at 85%. I crewed on an A-Fuel car that had 11:0 to 1 and it would run 270 mph. Nitro is different than alcohol in that the extra oxygen molecule brings a whole lot to it. If you get crazy with compression the tuning window gets very narrow in a heck of a hurry. Someone listed above all the things that need to be changed above. ie nitro spool etc etc. You have been asked to help but you don't say what the engine is going into. They have the same parts but spec'd differently on everything. You really have to be disciplined on start up and shutdown on nitro or people can be seriously hurt. This one is in a dragboat but it could go in a car maybe with a couple % less to start off or a .010 thicker headgasket. Nostalgia nitro.jpg
