New Pro Comp class

    Proposal for new "Pro Comp" class for NHRA Divisional competition -
    -1/8 mile
    -Run what you brung (Top Alcohol, Nitro, Outlaw Pro Mod, Altered, etc.)
    -3.66 quickest dial in - 4.10 slowest dial in
    -32 car field
    -Similar payout Top Alcohol divisional purse (700 quarters, 900 semis, 1500 r/u, 2500 win)

    1/8 mile opens the door for current Advanced ET cert cars/drivers to run the class with no major modifications. If it was 1/4 mile and quicker than 6.00, the cars would need Top Alcohol/Pro Mod cert, licenses, carbon brakes, etc.

    This would need to be at all divisionals within a Division with a Division Champion crowned. Nobody is going to pull out of TD for a one-off deal.

    The first step is we need to show there is racer support for this. If you like this idea spread the word!

    im interested with no od or weight limits on screws 3.66-4.10 dials this is good for a lot of cars
    1/8 mile only is safer / cheaper for most

    I still believe the cause all started letting the screws in. COST WENT UP.Before that you had a ton of cars!!!

    Wow!
    Sounds a lot like like Funny Car Chaos with more than just funny's! The ET range is a bit stout but I'd be down with our new injected nitro F/C if we can get to running that quick. I'd bet a lot of other racers would be too!

    Before the screws came out if you ordered a roots supercharger, before it was delivered, it was already obsolete by the time you bolted it on your car. Do you remember the helix blower wars? The screw blowers put a stop to it. Even one of the leading roots blower manufacturers who raced TA/FC bought a screw.

    Roots....cheaper....hmm.

    NHRA legal Pro Mods can only run a roots...Last I heard a Chuck Ford RENTAL blower costs $6000 a race and he takes it off after the race. I'm sure a new Janis, Billes or Hammer deal is going to cost close to $40k for a hat/blower combo. Even at $30k, if you have a spare, you're going to have to have $50-$70k in blowers, or rent a Ford for $72k a year.

    Even better when you figure out your <insert the blower you have on the car> is not the hot lick anymore because <the other guy> has a new mod and you gotta have it to stay competitive. I saw Stevie Fast post his old blowers for sale for $22k after he switched to another mfg.

    Yeah, that sounds way better than $20-25k for a brand new PSI D rotor and carbon hat.

    This would be Pro Tree racing with a 3.66 Index or bracket racing still like T/D, but screw blower, etc allowed?

    I think NHRA should bring back Pro Comp but disallowing screws would keep the separation between Top Alcohol and Pro Comp more defined. And keep the class in financial control.

    I agree with Rich Bailey, no screws. Would keep if cost effective and separated from Top Alcohol, allowing a lot more diversity in the class with different type cars and power adders.

    Don't let this great class get out monied like the rest of them. And rather than a bracket race, dial in a good low index which will allow for a heads up pro tree. And please allow for the use of pick ups to tow your car to the line!

    You can buy a screw blower for less then a top roots . price out a HAMMER ,OR CFH …$18,000 +

    Okay here's what we have done to make our group successful and competitive. Very few rules. 1. no screws 2. no carbs. 3. No Pro Chargers. Nitro okay. 6.75 index. After careful consideration and in the case of NHRA's Pro Comp class I would still have the rules above but no index and no dial in. Heads up, 16 car qualified field on the eighth mile. If I want to run it but i don't qualify well then that's racing but I think most cars will get in for now and it would be a success. If racers want to spend a zillion on a roots fine do so but you don't have too. If its an overwhelming success then go to 32 car field. There will still be room teams like mine for years to come.

    I think it would be cool to do a run what ya brung, 3.66 or 6.00 index class with pro tree. 6.75 index is just another local q16 race. By doing the way I mentioned, it will allow more people who want to bracket race T/D at divisional races a chance to get in the field without running those numbers and it will increase car counts for the new class.

    I could be wrong, but I thought there was a Pro Comp class somewhere that was doing something similar, but with a 6.20 index.

    Our class is Pro Comp but it's a 6.75 index. I'm not sure who is not in realityville (maybe its me) but a 6.75 in the quarter is pretty damn quick. If it was a 6.50 limit and guys like me that can't run that fast can still enter and try then that would be a good compromise for those that can run in the the 30's and 40's.

    I obviously won't have dates until NHRA posts the divisional schedule, but I have a verbal agreement in place to try to do 3 races at Evadale Raceway next year. It's an 1/8 mile track around Beaumont, Texas (1.5 hr east of Houston). There's interest to take this to other tracks as well (in Div. 4 area).

    Since we aren't talking about something catered to run at a NHRA divisional, what we are now putting together is a 3.80 "soft" index class, heads up pro tree. Run what you brung.

    The "soft" index - if you run under 3.80, the amount you run under gets added to your margin of victory. If you still win, you move on, if not, you are eliminated. If you move on, you carry that 'hit' for the rest of the event to your margin of victory.

    All run but in the event there was more than 32 cars, only the 16 quickest winners would advance to round two. One time trial with the scoreboards off (you get a timeslip). Chip draw for each round's pairings.

    No purse finalized but my goal is $400 at 8 cars. Ideally there would be a race Friday night and a race Saturday night. The Friday night race would be reduced purse, but that's still better than just qualifying Friday night for no purse.

    There's some 3.80 TD cars down here already and quite a few in the area that run 3.90's in TD trim that may be able to step up to the 3.80's for heads up. That's not counting other types of cars such as fuel altereds, nostalgia type cars, etc. Nitro is allowed. Build it, bring it and make it safe.

    I don't get this conversation, about bashing screws.....

    You can buy a screw, and seat it in, and forget it mostly. No regular maintenance, no fuss, perfect consistency. Just what you need for this kind of class. Consistency and low parasitic power.

    Not the case with a roots deal.

    In terms of cost, a new c-screw deal is going to set you back 22K with a good hat. A new roots deal is going to set you back way more.

    Ohio area has quite a bit of a heads up scene for dragsters and the like. Different rules, but we don't have anything down here for "outlaw" races outside of doorcars and Top Alcohol.
